Softcover Printed Full Colour. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ## Mistress of Many by Harriette Wilson 1960 ~ The Memoirs of a Beautiful Women who Lived for Love ## ## THIS BOOK: This is the 1960 edition classified as VERY GOOD and first published in 1960. The binding is full colour and matt. The book is in good order, with minor bumping, shelf wear, and an odd foxing mark. The page edges are discoloured due to the paper's quality. ## ## Deliberately written for blackmail, the memoirs of the Regency period's most famous and wittiest courtesan tell us the fascinating story of the life of the demimondaine, of the "Fashionable Impures," as they were called. At the early age of fifteen, Harriette ran away to Brighton to become the mistress of an earl, whom she soon found a dead bore and left for more amusing company and was living in style in the heart of Mayfair. While still living in Brighton, she refused an invitation from the Prince Regent as?"to travel fifty-two miles this bad weather merely to see a man would be madness," a characteristic action of this original and fiercely independent woman who was the toast of the town. The story of her early love for Lord Ponsonby, "the most handsome man of his time," is both passionate and romantic and is followed by many affairs of varying intensity, all of which she describes with wit, humour and complete frankness. ## ## When publishing her memoirs, she gave her victims a chance to buy themselves out of the text. The Duke of Wellington (to who she was not very kind) refused to be blackmailed and wrote back, "Publish and be damned". So publish she did, and her readers have been delighted ever since. ## ## Mistress of Many is readable and entertaining, outspoken and amusing, and gives a fascinating picture of the low aristocratic life of the time. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ### Remember Me To God - 1957 ## FIRST EDITION ### ~#~ THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD: The pages have a slight discolouring due to paper quality. No bumping, no inscriptions. The jacket is in great condition. The Dust jacket, when there was one, attached with the curse of book sellers: Sellotape, which leaves a brown mark, on front and back endpapers. 64 years ago the life of the teens and what they go through, hormonally just the same as now, but now more understanding of what is happening.~#~ ~#~ ADAM AMSTERDAM is a judge. He is also a Jew. He is a respected member of the prosperous Jewish Community in Boston, Mass. But, like so many other parents, he and his wife Bessie, now middle aged, find themselves unable to understand what is happening to their children as they grow up. During his Harvard career, their son Richard tries to achieve a compromise between the Jewish way of life to which he has been brought up, and the free, typically American, way of life which he feels his education and ambition are compelling him to adopt. His fifteen-year-old sister Dorothy is gauche, shy, burdened with a stammer, confused by the longings which are awakening within her, antagonistic towards her parents' well-meant efforts to give her a normal, happy life. Myron Kaufmann brings his characters to vivid life, depicting unerringly the fumbling wisdom of middle age, the unintentional cruelty of youth, the subtle reactions to complicated and conflicting loyalties, mingled always with the saving touch of humour which imbues real everyday life. He writes of the whole range of human, passions with masterly perception; in Richard's affair with a Gentile girl are to be found all the tumult and tenderness of young love, while Dorothy's uncertain experiments in flirtation are answered with the terrifying brutality of lust. ~#~ #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Eight Chinese Plays. From the 13th Century to the Present. Very slight foxing to inside cover. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Since the first European rendering of a Chinese play in 1735, translation of Chinese drama into Western languagues has remained spasmodic and partial. William Dolby's aim in offering these new translations is to give a brief but balanced idea of the magnitude, range and quality of Chinese drama - which it has hitherto scarcely been possible to obtain from existing translations. This collection presents a number of plays which have never bedfore been translated, in major dramatic genres from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. Dr. Dolby's translations are scrupulously full, and take every opportunity to convey the variety and liveliness of the originals. 164 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Impression. Hardback. Henry James and the French Novel. Slight foxing to edge. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. Sunned spine to D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Henry James owed more than is generally relaised to the example of contemporary French writers. His interest in French literature was lifelong, his constant reading and re-reading of French novelists often providing the stimulus of form of the French, which he found lacking in the American and the English novel. Many of James's later concerns as a novelist have their origin in his attempts to emulate Balzac, who seemed to him to have solved technical problems he had himself failed to solve in his early works. James's search for a unified language - with no distinctive break and interior monologue - is Flaubert's. His manner of presenting the visible world came to owe much to the ideas of the Goncourts, Daudet and other writers of the 'L'Art pour l'Art' movement, ideas that he assimilated and transformed for his own imaginative purposes. But this book is not a narrow study of 'influences'; it is a comparative study which shows how major writers evolved their own unique approaches towards similar themes and problems. This study offers a fascinating view into James's literary workshop from a vantage-point hitherto largely overlooked, yet one that proves highly rewarding in its illumination of many aspects of James's work. 221pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
