Softcover. Condition: New. Illustrated. The Jewish Museum in Berlin tells the story of German-Jewish history from the fourth century to the present. It consists of two buildings: the first, a former courthouse, was built in the eighteenth century, and the second, a massive extension that opened to the public in 2001, was designed by the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind (born 1946). Libeskind's building is comprised of a zinc faade and a set of three underground allegorical roads. The first leads to the main stairs, and by implication to the continuation of Berlin's history in the Museum; the second leads outdoors into the E.T.A. Hoffmann Garden, representing the exile and emigration of the Jews from Germany; and the third road leads to a dead end, representing the Holocaust void. This road cuts through the ensemble as a whole, and evokes, in the architect's words, that which can never be exhibited when it comes to Jewish Berlin history: humanity reduced to ashes. For Libeskind, a Polish Jew raised not far from Berlin who lost many relatives in the Holocaust, this extraordinary building was an intensely personal undertaking with numerous responsibilities. This volume details this most freighted and complex of buildings.

Softcover. Condition: New. When the New Museum, long a champion of downtown New York culture and unconventional art, announced that it would build itself a new home on the Bowery--a mostly bleak strip of flophouses and restaurant-supply storefronts--the art world wondered what this move would mean for the museum, and, just as important, how the museum would look. Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA (winners of the 2010 Pritzker Prize) received the commission in 2002; their new New Museum, which opened in December 2007, looks like a dramatic tower of seven rectangular boxes, stacked irregularly atop one another with edges protruding to the sides and front, and clad in a seamless anodized-aluminum mesh that dresses the whole of the building in a delicate, filmy, softly shimmering skin. With windows just visible behind this porous scrimlike surface, the building appears as a single, coherent and even heroic form that is nevertheless mutable, dynamic and animated by the changing light of day--an appropriate visual metaphor for the openness of the New Museum and the ever-changing nature of contemporary art. This monograph treats the institution's design and construction in depth, through images, writings and an interview with the architects.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Chronicling the life and career of a 20th-century master Willem de Kooning arrived in the United States in 1926 as a 22-year-old stowaway from Holland--soon to become a leading figure in the emergence of Abstract Expressionist painting in New York. This volume presents over 100 illustrations from each phase of de Kooning's career, and describes the personal and art historical background behind his work and its critical reception. Sally Yard, author of Willem de Kooning: The First Twenty-Six Years in New York, details the progress of de Kooning's career, from his brief stint as a WPA painter, to his first one-person exhibition of abstract work in 1948. Five years later, his series of women rendered in aggressive, lashing gestures stunned contemporaries, not only for their vehemence but for their supposed reversal in direction from "pure" abstraction to figuration. Of course, the alternation, struggle and intertwining between these two tendencies remained essential to de Kooning's work over six decades (as he once commented, "I was reading Kierkegaard and I came across the phrase 'To be pure is to will one thing.' It made me sick.") Featuring some of de Kooning's most remarkable writings, interviews with Harold Rosenberg and James T. Valliere, lavish illustrations and Yard's accessible scholarly discussion, Willem de Kooning: Works, Writings, Interviews is invaluable for anyone seeking to understand the work and impact of this twentieth-century master.

Softcover. Condition: Good. This book compiles documentation for two unrealized projects by the legendary duo of Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009): "The Mastaba," a project conceived in 1977 for the United Arabic Emirates, and "Over the River," a project recently conceived for the Arkansas River. "Mastaba," Arabic for "bench," is proposed as a sculpture of approximately 410,000 horizontally stacked and variously colored oil barrels. Trees and shrubbery would be planted around the Mastaba as a windbreak against the sand and windstorms; the area adjacent to the walkways approaching the Mastaba would resemble an oasis with flowers and grass. "Over the River" consists of a succession of fabric panels to be suspended above the Arkansas River, for a period of two weeks sometime between mid-July and mid-August of any given year in the future (2013 at the earliest). Both projects are fully illustrated with preparatory drawings and photographs of the proposed locations.

Softcover. Condition: Good. With the new By Architects series, Ediciones Pol?grafa launches an innovative project dedicated to showcasing furniture and objects designed by some of the most important architects of the twentieth century. Three titles open this series: Alvar Aalto, Jean Prouv? and Ray and Charles Eames.Best known for their contributions to architecture, furniture design (especially the Eames chair), industrial design, film and photography, Charles and Ray Eames remain among the most renowned American designers of the twentieth century. The couple married in 1941 and moved to California, where they pursued their furniture design in molded plywood. During the war they were commissioned by the U.S. Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eames' molded plywood furniture. Their iconic molded plywood chair was called "the chair of the century" by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy.In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, their design and imaginative use of materials making this house a mecca for architects and designers internationally. Today it is considered one of the most important postwar residences built anywhere in the world. After the war, the Eames continued to create new furniture designs, such as the Fiberglass Chairs (1950), the famous Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), the Time Life stool (1960), the 3473 sofa (1964) and the seating for Dulles and O'Hare airports--a design still in use in lounges around the world today. In the 70s they expanded their operations into cinema, producing many beautiful short films. Charles and Ray received honorary degrees and awards from universities and organizations across the country. The Eames Office still operates today.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An introductory monograph on the 20th century's most revolutionary artistPablo Picasso (1881-1973) was one of the most innovative, experimental, prolific, influential and controversial painters of the 20th century. Part of Poligrafa's Modern Masters series, this affordable monograph follows Picasso throughout his career, a career that spanned nearly eight decades and produced more than 100,000 works. Picasso selects more than 60 of the artist's most representative works that follow the artist from his poetic images of the impoverished and circus performers, from his beloved blue and rose periods to his revolutionary cubist period depicting the confusion of modern life, and beyond. In addition to a brief introduction, this volume contains analysis of the artist's morphing stylistic characteristics over the decades and individual commentary on each of the works reproduced. Softcover. Condition: Good. A natural candidate for Poligrafa's Design by Architects series, Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was concerned with every detail of the environments he designed, from the basic structure right down to the door handles. When he designed St Catherine's College for Oxford University in 1960, even the height of the cedar trees he planted and the varieties of fish he installed in the ponds were of urgent concern; there was no place, in Jacobsen's thinking, where architecture left off and design took over, and today he is equally famed for his achievements in both domains. In the realm of furniture design, such creations as the Egg, Series 7, Ant and Swan chairs have become icons of Danish design. A sinuous organic line and strong sculptural presence are the foremost qualities of the Jacobsen look. Not one straight line disturbs the soft curves of these creations. This heretical departure from the prevailing hard geometrical paradigm of the time is one of the cornerstones of Arne Jacobsen's furniture and the source of his importance today.
