On October 25 1946, in a crowded room in Cambridge, England, the great 20th century philosophers Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper came face to face for the first and only time. The meeting, which lasted ten minutes, did not go well. Their loud and aggressive confronttion became the stuff of instant legend, but precisely what happened during that brief confrontation remianded for decades the subject of intense disagreement. An engaging mix of philosophy, history, biographyand literary detection, this book explores through this confrontation, the history of pohilosophy in the 20th century. At the center of the story stand the two ginats of philosophy themselves, proud, irascible, larger than life, and spoiling for a fight. Dust jacket protected with vinyl cover. Odtherwise and As New book with a faultless interior. Set against the brilliantly drawn backdrop of India at the turn of the millennium, this book tells the story of a young couple, penniless but gloriously in love. Obsessed with each other, they move from a small town in the big city, where the man, who dreams of being a writer, works feverishly on a novel, stopping only to feed his ceaseless desire for his beautiful wife. A chance occurrence allows the lovers to abandon the city for a mist-shrouded spur of th lower Himalayas and move into a sprawling house, which they hope will embody their love At first they pursue their deep physical need with a reckless intensity. But during renovations of the house, a set of diaries written by the original inhabitant a glamorous American adventuress- is unearthed, and the narrator finds himself. irresistibly drawn away from his wife and thus into another world and time, into the hole history. As his life and love fall apart, he slowly begins to uncover the dark secrets at the heart her story, until the shocking truth is laid bare an all certainties are overturned. Inventive, playful, heartbreaking, brimming with ideas and memorable characters, the book celebrates the chaotic spirit of a country during a time of great change. It also offers, a searing, lucid prose, a deeply sensual and moving meditation on the nature of desire, history, truth and art. This is a major novel by one of the most significant new voices of his generation.

In these powerful and moving tales, he reveals a complex web of athletes, trainers, and promoters and their extended families, all players in an unforgiving business where victory, like defeat, comes at a dark and painful price." Since then she has adopted, with some success, the genre of fictionalized biography and, apart from her splendid novelization of the life of Beryl Markham, seems to be working her way through the wives of Ernest Hemingway. "After a shattering incidence of violence in New York City, Daniel Emerson has returned to the Hudson River town where he grew up. There, along with Kate Ellis and her daughter, Ruby, he settles into the kind of secure and comfortable family life he longed for during his emotionally barren childhood. But then he falls in love with Iris Davenport, the black woman whose son is Ruby's best friend. During a freak October blizzard, Daniel is stranded at Iris's house, and they spend the night together -- the beginning of a sexual liaison that eventually imperils all their relationships, Daniel's profession, their children's well-being, their own race-blindness, and their view of themselves as essentially good people. And the emotional stakes are raised even higher when Iris's husband, Hampton, suffers a devastating accidental injury at Daniel's hands." Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Wesley Allsbrook (illustrator). 1st Edition. This book, or a version of it, was one of the last projects that Bourdain started - with the help of his assistant ("lieutenant" as he liked to call her) and co-author, Laurie Woolever. And I'd say that Laurie Woolever's name deserves to be writ as large as that of Anthony Bourdain. She has managed to cobble together a fascinating book. 43 of the many places in the world that AB visited are discussed in alphabetical order, with ABs quotes printed in blue (and you realize what a craftsman this guy was at stringing words together), mixed in with travel guide stuff and recommendations for hotels and restaurants. Woolever did another posthumous homage to her boss with "Bourdain: The Definitive Oral Biography" (also known as "Bourdain: In Stories") also in 2021. This fine copy in its fine dust jacket is a first printing and is signed on the title page by Laurie Woolever. Signed by a contributor.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Debut collection of eight short stories from this talented writer. Most of the stories deal with Americans abroad, coping with the culture shock of third world upheavals. This book, and his follow-up novel, "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk", were much lauded and won all sorts of awards. (The novel was made into a 3D, highly technological, film by Ang Lee which, despite having such actors as Steve Martin, Vin Diesel, Chris Tucker and Kristen Stewart in supporting roles, did not achieve much success.) This copy of the first printing is inscribed by the author on the title page thus: "For Andy Weinberger, with thanks for reading Che and making it a Book Sense pick. 'Where no one in his right mind would want to go' - my wife agrees with you. Again, many thanks - Ben Fountain - Dallas, Texas, 8-22-06". So, Andy Weinberger is, or was, the co-owner of a bookstore in Sonoma, California (a bookmark from Readers' Books is laid in), and a Book Sense pick is a promotional activity run for independent bookstores by the American Booksellers Association. I'm not sure what Ben's quotation is - perhaps a line from the book? August 2006 was the month of publication. To add interest to this already interesting copy, a three-page printout is loosely inserted, being an article on Ben Fountain by Zac Crain of D Magazine. Apart from slight softening to base of spine, a fine copy in fine dust jacket. MC. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Evan Sung (photographer) (illustrator). Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto provides a lengthy and quite personal introduction to this, his second cookbook. He purposely chose to pay homage to Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" because he wants to do for Japanese home cooking what Julia did for French cuisine. These are Morimoto's favorite dishes - meals that he would "whip up for you and your family in your kitchen if I could." This later printing of the first edition is boldly signed by Morimoto on the title page in Japanese. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. Quite a heavy book, so overseas buyers may well need to expect additional shipping charges. Signed by Author(s).
