First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Heilgers, Louise. Rose and Grey. A Further Collection of Short Stories. London: The Dryden Press, 1914. First edition. 16mo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-172 [173-175: blank] [176: printer's imprint]. Original pictorial wrappers printed in shades of black and red. Rear cover dust-soiled, otherwise a very good copy of this fragile shilling paperback. #1329. $35. A representative sampling of this minor author's specialty: very short and bitter stories about love gone bad, usually because of a villainous man. At least one story here, "The Snake," is supernatural. The author is notable for an ability to make very short stories seem complete. Her themes become monotonous but her tone is remarkable for its unwavering intensity.
