Al Young (1939 2021) was an American poet, novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and professor. He was named Poet Laureate of California by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2005 to 2008. Young authored novels, collections of poetry, essays, and memoirs. His work appeared in Paris Review, Ploughshares, Essence, The New York Times, Chicago Review, Seattle Review, Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz & Literature, Chelsea, Rolling Stone, Gathering of the Tribes, and in anthologies including the Norton Anthology of African American Literature, and the Oxford Anthology of African American Literature. Young was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in fiction. He was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship, two Puschart prizes, the PEN-USA Award, multiple National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and a Wallace Stegner fellowship. He twice received the American Book Award, for Bodies and Soul: Musical Memoirs (1982) and The Sound of Dreams Remembered: Poems 19902000 (2002). In 2009, Young was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Whittier College. Seduction by Light is an amazing novel that captures the life of Mamie Franklin, an ex-film and singing star turned maid. Mamie is blessed with psychic powers and soon has to cope with the death of her common-law husband, Burley, and his ultimate return as a spirit with some unfinished business. Mamie seems like an old friend and you can't help but laugh and then cry at all the things that happen to her. From when she sees the ghost of her soul-buddy, Benjamin Franklin (yes, the one and only, kite-flying, electricity discovering, hundred dollar bill one) , to when she loses Burley and is forced to face life without the man she'd fallen so in love with; Mamie Franklin is a character you can cheer for and love. This novel is beautifully written and has lovable characters and it seems like Mamie (who narrates in her own vernacular) is an old friend just sitting down next to you telling you her story. Al Young, notable as California's Poet Laureate Emeritus, brings Mamie and her world vividly to life and makes the book hard to put down. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 338 pages; Signed by Author First Edition Thus (1972), so stated. The hardcover edition was publishedin 1970; Second Printing.
