Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Book Society. Hardback. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. previous owners ex libris name sticker to inside cover. Slightly sunned spine and top edge to cloth. Wear and tear to D/J. Small piece missing from top edge of D/J. Foxing to D/J. This book is an intimately revealing study of the mental and emotional characteristics common to the majority of the American people. In applying the techniques of psychology and anthropology to a complex modern community, the author has undertaken successfully a novel task. The result is a penetrating analysis that brings out important and sometimes startling elements in the American national character. Not the least fascinating part of the study is the material upon which it is based. The typical emotional attitudes of Americans towards father and mother, towards the opposite sex, to children, to alien groups and to business and public life are depicted and illustrated with great clary and a remarkable charm and wil. From these attitudes and from the habits and actions they inspire, the author draws his picture of a distinct national character. He also traces their origin in the upbringing and social surroundings natural to a community dominated by the second generation immigrant. It is perhaps the ways in which the mental make-up of Americans differ from our own that will most interest the English reader. These differences are too often overlooked in the easy and widespread assumption that the English and the Americans are fundamentally alike. Mutual understanding cannot flourish if it is founded on delusions and in drawing attention to this particular delusion, if at times with an unflattering objectivity, Mr. Gorer is performing a service in the cause of Anglo-American understanding. 211 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
