red full cloth hardcover 8vo. (octavo). no dustwrapper. fine cond. looks new. like new. binding square & tight. covers clean. edges clean. contents free of markings. nice clean copy. no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplates, no names, inking, underlining, remainder markings etc~. 8th printing. x+183p. (list of) works consulted. japanese literature. japanese history. theatrics. stage & screen dramaturgy. ~ THE MOST famous and popular work in the entire Japanese theatrical repertory is, beyond any doubt, Ch?shingura, "The Treasury of Loyal Retainers" also known as the story of the Forty~Six (or Forty~Seven) Ronin. The play itself (and the numerous adaptations made since it was first created in 1748) together with the historical and legendary materials surrounding the story of the vendetta have become part of the heritage of the Japanese people. Surely there cannot be many Japanese unfamiliar with the story and its heroes, even if they are quite unaware that Ch?shingura was first written as a puppet play. It has again and again been made into films and, more recently, into television dramas; in whatever medium it continues to exert an undiminished attraction for the Japanese public. The full title of the play is Kanadehon Ch?shingura. The first word means "a copybook of kana," a penmanship book for writing the forty~seven symbols making up the Japanese syllabary. The title calls attention to the coincidence between the number of kana and the number of heroes who took part in the vendetta.
