Book First Edition
(Hardcover, 1983). 1983 1st edition. Large 4to (233 x 299mm). Pp216. Colour paintings and b/w engravings throughout, bibliography, maroon end-papers. Cream boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight use, minor abrasions to several pages formerly adhering to one another, illustrations largely unaffected. Edges foxed. Signature to end-paper. Good in slightly faded dust-wrapper with small tear. This is a good collection of illustrations presented in chrological order, illustrating Tunnicliffe's ouput as a book illustrator. Each illustration is accompanied by a short excerpt of the text which it illustrated. "This book covers the years between 1932 and 1977 when (Tunnicliffe) illustrated so many country books that in his old age he could never be sure just how many he had done. In fact, there were eighty-eight. He didn't accept every commission offered, but undertook only those books he felt he understood. .For many, black and white wood-engravings and scraperboards represent the best of Tunnicliffe's work. Their preference has been .well catered for in the present collection - because, of course, black-and-white accounted for the greater part of the artist's output as an illustrator." Chapters include: A demonstrably gifted man; A whiff of nostalgia - My Country Book; The farm scene - Both Sides of The Road; The first milestone - from A Book of Birds, to Wild Life in a Southern County (24 titles); Dreams and wonderland - from Adventuring with a Nomad, to What to Look for in Winter (14 titles); The call of the wild - Shorelands Summer Diary; Beloved country - Mereside Chronicle. .

Oblong large 4to; original blue cloth; very good laminated pictorial dustwrapper; past owner's name on half-title page; pp. 120; with 50 large full-colour paintings. Very good condition. "Here is an artist's 'homage' to a polar wilderness he loves as a subject as much as a place to be. To him, the wildlife and the environment itself share equal and complimentary importance. His revelations about painting in general and his analysis of the joys the subject presents are informative, philosophical, full of personal anecdote, totally frank and often very funny indeed. . . Keith Hope Shackleton, painter, naturalist, explorer, broadcaster, and author, is one of Britain's best known living wildlife artists, Past President of both The Royal Society of Marine Artists and The Society of Wildlife Artists, and current Chairman of The Artists League of Great Britain. Though only distantly related to the Shackleton of Antarctic fame, he has shared the same passions. He has travelled and painted all his life, as a pilot, as a dinghy enthusiast, and latterly for many years as naturalist on the adventure ship Lindblad Explorer.".

Condition: new. (Hardcover, 1985). 1985 1st edition. Large 4to (268 x 316mm). Pp150. Colour plates by Tunnicliffe throughout, dark blue end-papers. Blue boards, spine titled in silver-gilt. Foreword by Peter Scott. Slight marks and fraying to boards, browning to edges. Good-plus in torn and chipped dust-wrapper. "[Tunnicliffe's] ability to portray [bird's] natural behaviour has always found favour with ornithologists. He had an eye for the intrinsic beauty of postures and groupings of birds at rest, but he also moved boldly in new areas where most artists feared to tread: painting birds in flight, in conflict, proud display or wind-blown awkwardness with equal confidence and success. The genius that sets a Tunnicliffe painting apart from a mere study of birds stems from his view that a work of art should have its 'own particular claim to be beautiful, not because it slavishly imitated the form and colour of a bird but because it had used the bird and controlled it to make a new beauty'. To this end he devoted as much attention to the bird's setting (and to the real or imagined weather conditions) as he did to the creature itself. Naturalists who contemplate these paintings will no doubt agree with the artist's modest assertion that he 'felt he knew his birds'. Others, who appreciate great art when they see it (but rarely look for it in natural history painting), will be equally rewarded." .
