The book, now revised and updated, is divided into three parts. The first covers the formative era of Islamic civilization. The second traces the diffusion of worldwide Islamic societies, while the third explores their reaction to European imperialism, and emergence as independent states. The concluding chapters consider Islam's recent history, the formation of Islamic revival movements and global Islamic identities. The book is essential reading for students and for those seeking to understand the Muslim peoples. Reviews of first edition: "I do not think that any other world civilization can boast a comparable general account of such substance and quality . this is a great deal more than a textbook. It is a product oflearning, intellect and style of an extremely high order." ~ Journal oj the Royal Asiatic Society. "The value of A History of Islamic Societies lies in its sheer comprehensiveness. In one volume a vast amount of material is synthesized and presented in a clear and effective style. There is nothing else like it." ~ The Journal of Asian Studies. "Lapidus is concerned not with defining an essential Islam, but rather with mapping the role of Islamic beliefs, institutions, and identities in particular historical contexts." ~ International Journal oj Middle East Studies The first edition of A History of Islamic Societies was published in 1988 as a supplement to The Cambridge History of Islam (1970). Since publication, the book has become a classic work of history. The second edition brings this definitive and bestselling book to a new generation of readers.

Using extensive new research, John Gooch explores the nature and development of the three armed forces; their relationships with Mussolini and the impact of his policies and command; the development of operational and strategic thought; and the deployment and use of force in Libya, Abyssinia and Spain. He emphasises Mussolini's long~term expansionist goals and explains how he responded to the structural pressures of the international system and the contingent pressures of events. This compelling account shows that while Mussolini bore ultimate responsibility for Italy's fateful entry into the Second World War, his generals and admirals bore a share of the blame for defeat through policies that all too often rested on irrationality and incompetence.

It is the people of that city in their last unthreatened years who are the subjects of this study. In considering the extraordinary culture of the Aztecs of Mexico it is impossible to ignore the extravagance of their practice of the ritual killing of humans. Inga Clendinnen takes up the challenge of rendering those killings intelligible, not at an ideological or abstract theoretical level, but through investigation of a wide field of social action: the routines, assumptions, and compelling experiences of daily life at all the emotional, moral, and aesthetic levels through which Aztecs sought to understand their world and identify its necessities. The enquiry is first pursued through the provenance and techniques of management of the victims, seeking the various grounds for their acquiescence. The massive material solidity of the late imperial city is explored to illuminate Aztec notions of temporality and change. Clendinnen then gives close attention to specific social organizations, tracing their distinctive forms of internal cohesion with their attendant tensions and their unobvious connections with other social structures. She discusses the worlds of women, of warriors and of priests, and of commoners, showing us that the mundane and taken~for~granted aspects of their lives in fact often had tremendous significance. Similarly, a wide zone of 'art' is investigated for its intimations of the sacred and the real. The whole culminates in an analysis and interpretation of high Aztec ritual and its meanings for participants and watchers alike. It is Clendinnen's re~creation and vividly dramatic analyses of Aztec rituals as performance art that provide the structure of this remarkable study. When so analyzed, the great span of the work of the gods in Tenochtitlan, arching from the main temple precinct through to the most local household observances, is shown to bind the key experiences and obsessive concerns of Aztec social existence in the late imperial city to the mannered violence of their ritual killings. "There is no other book quite like this one. It is probably the best presentation of the Aztec people, their culture, and their city from the point of view of the Aztecs themselves." ~MICHAEL D. COE, Charles J. MacCurdy Professor of Anthropology, Yale University. "Professor Clendinnen, an eloquent writer, a brilliant historian, and a very creative thinker, has crafted an intelligent book that is both informative and truly engaging. Its insightful interpretations add significantly to our understanding of the Nahuatl~speaking peoples of ancient Mexico and to our 'feeling' for the complex and seemingly paradoxical civilization they strung between the extremes of aesthetic concern and ascetic sacrifice." ~ J. JORGE KLOR DE ALVA, Professor of Anthropology, Princeton University. Jacket illustrations: Front: Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca. Borbonicus 22. Back: A woman sacrifice. Anthony Julius's highly acclaimed study looks both at the detail of Eliot's deployment of anti~Semitic discourse and at the role it played in his greater literary undertaking. Starting with an analysis of Eliot's anti~Semitic poems that situates them in their critical context, he moves to the prose work and an examination of the figure of the 'free~thinking Jew'. In conclusion he considers whether, as has elsewhere been suggested, Eliot's post~war work made amends for this aspect of his earlier writings. Julius's seminal study has provoked a reassessment of Eliot's work among poets, scholars, critics, and readers, that will invigorate debate for some time to come.

Whereas to date the comparative politics literature has focused closely on the path~breaking experience of Porto Alegre in Brazil, Van Cott's book leads the way in showing how these reforms can and should be studied in other contexts. Based on field research in ten different municipalities in Bolivia and Ecuador, Van Cott documents the promise and perils of 'radical democracy' as it is understood and pursued by indigenous political actors. The chief conceptual contribution of the book is to document and interpret what is unique about the attempt by indigenous Latin Americans to institute the same kinds of reforms that are now being introduced throughout the developing world (and often in developed country contexts as well)." (Kent Eaton, Univ. Of Calif.) "Radical Democracy in the Andes is a comparative politics tour de force. This is perhaps the best and most comprehensive volume to date assessing the translation of the recent Andean indigenous rights movements into local governance. It fills a gaping lacuna by unifying otherwise disparate literatures on democratic consolidation in the dynamic polities of Bolivia and Ecuador, and the broader 'malaise of Latin American democracy' literature. Radical Democracy in the Andes is a must~read, based on its originality, thoroughness, lucid writing, and well~conceived challenges to conventional wisdom in both its methodological approach and its empirical exploration." (Todd Eisenstadt, American Univ.).

From the twelfth to the nineteenth century its political history was dominated by the struggle of competing leagues of fighting men. This paperback volume, comprised of chapters selected from volumes 3 and 4 of The Cambridge History of Japan, traces the institutional development of warrior rule and dominance. Among the topics discussed are the gradual nature of the shift from court aristocrats to military hegemons, the epic battles between the Taira and the Minamoto in the 1180s, the development of a new system of justice, and the fall of Kamakura~which was related to the great invasions launched by the Mongol emperor of China in 1274 and 1281. In addition to discussing the transitions between various regimes, the book describes the proliferation of Akuto, or outlaw bands; the rising level of violence, treachery, and revolt among the military leaders and contenders; and the building of a Tokugawa order. By the eighteenth century, warrior rule had come full circle. Centuries of peace brought a transformation and bureaucratization of the samurai class. Warrior values remained central to the ethical code of modern Japan, however. After the Meiji government was secure, its leaders designed their education and codes to preserve the values of loyalty and fortitude on which their warrior ancestors had prided themselves.
