K. Fairbank, "is the ticking time bomb in U.S.China policy." Now, before time runs out, Ralph N. Clough offers this masterly analysis of the Taiwan dilemma set against the background of the island's history, politics, and economic development. Clough begins by tracing the changing attitude of the United States toward Taiwan ~from disinterest after World War II to deep concern that began with the Korean War and continued until the peace in Vietnam. He then undertakes a thorough description of the island and its people. He discusses Taiwan's political strµcture, the strengths and weaknesses of its society, and the evolving relationship between native Taiwanese and the mainlanders who arrived after 1945. Clough fully examines the complex military situation and the unfinished civil war between the island and the mainland. He discusses, too, the war of diplomacy between the two Chinas, carrying his account into the 1970s and Taiwan's expulsion from the U .N. With insight and understanding, he describes Taiwan's fight for survival as an independent state and its effort to maintain commercial relations, particularly with Japan. The book concludes with a carefully reasoned analysis of Taiwan's role in U.S.~China relations. Clough's prognosis for the future is marred neither by a pessimist's despair over complexity nor by an optimist's blindness to unhappy facts. His book is a model of historical scholarship combined with the insights derived from practical experience and fieldwork. It will be invaluable to all students, scholars, legislators, and businessmen involved in the formulation of a U.S.~China policy.

The book begins with the discovery of Brazil by the Portuguese and Spaniards in 1500 and describes the changing European attitudes toward the Indians, ranging from "noble savage" admiration to hostility, fear, and scorn. The conquest of the long coast is described as is the discovery and penetration of the Amazon, the exploration of the interior in search of Indian slaves, cattle ranching, Amazon forest produce, and gold; the expulsion of French and later Dutch colonies. There are raids and battles with different tribes, enslavement and forced labor, and the devastating introduction of European diseases. European religion did not soften or palliate the essential outcome of the European presence in Brazil, though the Jesuit record included much to honor the humanity of many missionary priests. For the Indians, it was a history of decline from a self~sufficient series of tribal societies, which the first settlers had seen as Edenic, to the brutal, corrupted, often sickly, and demoralized populations driven from their traditional homelands and deprived of the sustenance and identity their tribal traditions and ways of hunting, work, and crafts had once given them. Red Gold fully explores the elements of a major historical tragedy: the defeat and decimation of Brazil's native population. It explains the discovery, conquest, and exploration of modern Brazil, and how the Portuguese won so much. It is rich with excitement and adventure; notably the exploration of the Amazon and the Mato Grosso, and the exploits of "bandeirante" raiders from Sao Paulo. Being the first book to cover the complete range of its enormous subject, Red Gold not only fills a gap in the existing literature but bids fair to become the definitive modern account.
