Okada, an acclaimed abstract expressionist painter, was born in 1902 in Yokohama, and went to Paris at age 22 to study European art with Foujita Tsuguharu before returning to Japan in 1927. He came to America in 1950, settling in New York. He quickly gained success and became a U.S. citizen in 1960.
