Softcover. Condition: Good. This biography of Ramakrishna was written for the West by one of England's most talented authors. The writing is beautiful in itself, but the story of a most unusual man with unheard of spiritual yearning is what this book is really about.Excerpt: "This is the story of a phenomenon. I will begin by calling him simply that, rather than "holy man,"mystic,"or "saint"; all emotive words with mixed associations which may attract some readers, repel others."A phenomenon is always a fact, an object of experience. That is how I shall try to approach Ramakrishna . . . I only ask you to approach Ramakrishna with the same open-minded curiosity you might feel for any highly unusual human being.".

Book
Softcover. Condition: Good. This book is about the practice of Raja Yoga. The method has been called the soul of all the yogas. The emphsis here in on the control of the mind through concentration and meditation. Raja yoga is also called the yoga of meditation. It is regarded as the psychological way to union with God. Rousing the Kundalini is the one and only way to attain Divine Wisdom. The rousing may come in various ways: through love for God, through the mercy of perfected sages, or through the power of the analytic will of the philosopher. Wherever there was any manifestation of what is ordinarily called supernatural power or wisdom, there a little current of Kundalini must have found its way into the Sushumna. Only, in the vast majority of such cases, the people had ignorantly stumbled on some practice which set free a minute portion of the coiled-up Kundalini. All worship, consciously or unconsciously, leads to this end. The man who thinks that he is receiving response to his prayers does not know that the fulfillment comes from his own nature, that he has succeeded by the mental attitude of prayer in waking up a bit of this infinite power which is coiled up within himself. Thus, what people ignorantly worship under various names, through fear and tribulation, the Yogi declares to the world to be the real power coiled up in every being, the Mother of eternal happiness, if we but know how to approach her. And Raja Yoga is the science of religion, the rationale of all worship, all prayers, forms, ceremonies, and miracles.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 2nd. LOVE has a divine essence, We experience this to some degree in all our human relationships since the love that we feel for one another is actually the attraction of God dwelling within. This love can lead us to God-realization, for, as the ancient sage Narada teaches, God is love.Narada's Bhakti Sutras are the most important Hindu text on the path of love, or Bhakti-Yoga. By directing our passions towards God, we discover that it is possible to have a relationship with God. The relationship deepens until finally we realize that we are never separate from God -- our true, divine nature is simply waiting to be revealed.

Softcover. Condition: Good. It is said in the practice of Vedanta that we have a right to work, but don't have a right to the results of our actions. We have to work as hard as we can, give the work our best quality effort, then step back and let the results take care of themselves. Or in the practice of yoga, offer the results to God.Work purifies the soul. This concept is a bit different than many of us have been taught in the West, but the book offers an interesting approach that can save us from a lot of misery and bring us closer to God. In fact, you don't even need to believe in God to practice this yoga.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 3rd. Product Description Note: This book has been reprinted in a new edition. Enter into the search engine 0874810353 for the latest version. The edition on this page is out of print. The Spiritual Heritage of India is a brief history of the philosophy of a country that has never distinguished philosophy from religion. The account extends from centuries of which there is no historical record to the recent Sri Ramakrishna revival of the ancient Vedanta. This book brings together in one volume the spiritual magnificence of the sacred books such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita, three ancient Indian scriptures which are the foundation of the Hindu spiritual heritage. In connection with each of the subjects taken up the author supplies sufficient quotation from the texts concerned, as incidental illustration and sometimes also as appended passages, to give body and force to the exposition. His approach is clear and practical, and at the same time profound and richly poetic. This book takes the reader on a journey through the wisdom enshrined in these celebrated classics. This book is both an excellent introduction for readers who are coming to the subject for the first time, and a series of meditations for those who already know it well. The author has ably entered into these ancient Indian treasure-houses of spirituality and offer their ancient wisdom to the modern spiritual seeker. About the Author Swami Prabhavananda was one of the pioneer swamis sent to America by the direct disciples of Ramakrishna to build on the work started by Swami Vivekananda at the turn of the century. The swami was born in India on December 26, 1893. In 1914, after graduating from Calcutta University, he joined the Ramakrishna Order of India and was initiated by Swami Brahmananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. In 1923, Swami Prabhavananda came to the United States. After two years as assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of San Francisco, he established the Vedanta Society of Portland. In December 1929, he came to Los Angeles where he founded the Vedanta Society of Southern California the following year.Under the able care of the swami, the Society grew into one of the largest Vedanta Societies in the West, with monasteries in Hollywood and Trabuco Canyon and convents in Hollywood and Santa Barbara.
