Hardcover. Condition: Good. Alice Ascher, a shopkeeper in Andover, is bludgeoned to death at her place of work. Next to die is Miss Bernard in Bexhill, then Mr. Clarke in Churston. More disturbing than the alphabetic sequence of the killings or the ABC Railway guide that the killer leaves at the scene of each crime are the taunting notes Hercule Poirot receives each time the killer is about to strike again. It is one of Poirots most challenging cases yet.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Over the past two or three years, wallpaper has experienced something of a renaissance. After years of minimalist plastered walls painted in neutral colours, people are coming round to the idea of individual expression in interior design and the enormous variety and scope that wallpaper allows for means that it is, at last, hip once again. With our new title, The Cutting Edge of Wallpaper, Black Dog Publishing pays tribute to this exciting new trend, looking at the techniques, products and designers at the forefront of contemporary wallpaper design. The book's layout is clear and accessible. Two essays open the title. One looks at the past history of wallpaper and how it has evolved, paying tribute to such key figures as William Morris and Andy Warhol. The second explains the techniques and methods being used in wallpaper design today, providing simple, user-friendly explanations of the applied technologies of wallpaper design. Following on from this are images and profiles of the work of over 80 contemporary designers working in the medium. From emerging talent to established figures in the field, this section gives a broad scope of all the key players in wallpaper today. It will be sub-divided into five categories according to the qualities of the work: figurative, abstract, decorative, architectural, technical and Interactive. Each section will have an introductory text explaining what these terms mean, and how this is expressed in wallpaper design. The illustrated profiles will further exemplify this with beautiful images of the wallpaper in situ, close-up and in the studio.A final essay explores how wallpaper technology and use is changing and what the field may bring in the future. It also looks at the collaborations and overlaps with other fields including architecture and art.The Cutting Edge of Wallpaper is a beautiful, stunningly illustrated and luxurious publication. It will provide an inspiration to designers and homeowners from all walks of life, and is the first to document this fascinating and fast expanding field of design.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1. Blasphemy: Art that Offends is a prescient examination of the perpetually troubled, often explosive relationship between religion, politics and art. This book draws on a rich wealth of visual material, tracing both the history of blasphemy as a concept and re-positioning the term in the twenty-first century.Questions of censorship and freedom of expression are today extremely volatile, a fact evinced by the recent international backlash against the Danish newspaper Islamic caricatures and the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh following the release of his notorious Submission. Blasphemy: Art that Offends provides a vital vantage point from which to view the complicated, compelling interrelations between religion, politics and the visual arts.Religious and political authorities have burned, banned and banished blasphemous art for centuries. In 1627, Dutch political authorities tortured and imprisoned the painter Johannes Torrentius for creating blasphemous images mostly pornographic renderings of mythological subjects and publicly burned his paintings. In 1989, US Senator Jesse Helms decried Andres Serranos Piss Christ calling it blasphemy and insensitivity toward the religious community. In a reversal of Torrentius artistic fate, Helms accusations, accompanied by the tearing up of a copy of the offending picture, helped raise Serranos status as a photographer, prompting both international visibility and an increase in sales of his work.God, Mohammed, Jesus, the Quran, the Bible and the Torah have all been at one point or another subjected to artistic interpretation, as have more liberal values, such as friendship, education and the nation-state. The book features a broad range of iconographic and textual material including painting, photography, calligraphy, illuminated manuscripts, advertisement, graphic design, and film.Works including Piss Christ and Dinos and Jake Chapmans Hell, as well as the films Submission and Monty Pythons Life of Brian are explored in detail by author and academic S Brent Plate. Also analysed are transgressive works of art, past and present, which walk the line between expression and incitement, by Francis Bacon, Banksy, Caravaggio, Marc Chagall, Marcus Harvey, Sarah Lucas, Edvard Munch, Herman Nitsch and Rembrandt amongst others. In the twenty-first century the boundary between artistic freedom and incitement is becoming ever more blurred, and the modes of objection by political and religious fundamentalists are becoming ever more extreme. BBlasphemy: Art that Offends is testament to the enduring power of images and words to provoke, challenge and engage, questioning the status of blasphemy in a world ever more divided as to what is acceptable and what is profane.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. The edition contains both volumes of the Papyrus of Ani, unabridged, in addition TGS included 75 pages of the simple English translation of the Book of the Dead and the 50 page book by E.A. Wallis Budge of the British Museum's, The Book of the Dead published in 1920. This 2 Volume set reproduces the 37 color plates of the original edition.- The sacred wisdom of the priests of ancient Egypt and the experiences of the soul after death: one of the most important books in history. Includes full hieroglyphic text along with a transliteration of sounds, word-for-word translation; a separate smooth translation. The Egyptian Book of the Dead is unquestionably one of the most influential books in all history. Embodying a ritual to be performed for the dead, with detailed instructions for the behavior of the disembodied spirit in the Land of the Gods, it served as the most important repository of religious authority for some three thousand years. Chapters were carved on the pyramids of the ancient 5th Dynasty, texts were written in papyrus, and selections were painted on mummy cases well into the Christian Era. In a certain sense it stood behind all Egyptian civilization.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. In the Face of History is a collection of works by some of the greatest European photographers of the twentieth century. Capturing some of the key events in the continent's history, these images of hope and despair illuminate the currents of political and social change that shape and are shaped by individual lives. The book contains the work of over 25 photographers, including Eugne Atget, Brassa, Roman Vishniac, Josef Sudek, Sune Jonsson, Robert Doisneau, Christer Strmholm, Anders Petersen, Boris Mikhailov, Chris Killip, Jitka Hanzlov and Wolfgang Tillmans. Through the camera, they attempt to make sense of the world around them, and the resulting "subjective documentary" provides us with an emotional insight into events that we may have read about countless times on paper, but never really comprehended. Texts by key academics will provide authoritative context for the images. With world events happening at a pace around us, and our perceptions of our roles within those events changing with them, In the Face of History is a timely publication. It will challenge traditional historical narratives and raise pertinent questions regarding responsibility and power. In the Face of History navigates an important stream of European practice that remains relatively uncharted, particularly in countries of the former Eastern bloc. It is a stream that might be termed "subjective documentary." Here, the image is observed rather than invented, reality is recorded rather than manipulated - and yet that reality is subtly and artistically inflected by the photographer's own unique vision or experience.Often uplifting, sometimes shocking, In the Face of History depicts a past that is fundamentally a part of our present, and in doing so, provides a moving new take on what it means to be European.

Softcover. Condition: Good. LA Artland is a survey of one of the most vibrant and influential art scenes of recent decades. Having produced world-renowned artists such as Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Chris Burden, Catherine Opie and Jim Shaw, Los Angeles since the 90s has rivaled New York as the US contemporary art capital. With the continuing success of LA-based art programs at CalArts, Art Center and UCLA, as well as a growing gallery scene stretching from blue-chip to artist-run spaces, Los Angeles as an art center continues to thrive, producing increasingly successful generations of artists. The focus of this publication is on extensive visual documentation of contemporary artists working in Los Angeles now, ranging from well-established international names to emerging talent.Alongside this visual survey are three essays. Chris Kraus incorporates interviews with artists and gallery owners providing insight into the network of scenes that make up contemporary LA art now. Jan Tumlir (independent art critic) contextualizes contemporary art in Los Angeles, commenting on recent trends and the influence of the LA-based MFA programs. Jane McFadden (art historian currently teaching at Art Center) traces specific trajectories between artists living and working in Los Angeles from the 60s to today, forming a unique history of the area.
