First Edition
Harding, Jonathan P. Pre-twentieth century American and European painting and sculpture. With the Thomas Dowse collection of watercolors by Harry L. Katz. Boston, Mass.: Boston Athenaeum : Distributed by Northeastern University Press, 1984, stated First Printing, 185pp., dust-jacket faded around edges with some light foxing, original price $30.00, very good large dark gray cloth, slight foxing on top foredge, previous owner's gift inscription: For Fred and Sharon with fond thoughts Gordon Krell (?). The Boston Athenaeum, founded in 1807, acquired its first sculpture in 1812 and its first painting in 1818. Throughout the nineteenth century the Athenaeum played a dominant role in the development of Boston's appreciation of the fine arts and was renowned for its painting and sculpture galleries which provided the city annual exhibitions from 1827 to 1873. The collection developed during these years includes works by such artists as Annibale Carracci, Giovanni Paolo Panini, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Gilbert Stuart, Washington Allston, Horatio Greenough and Thomas Crawford. This catalogue provides scholarly information on over three hundred pre-twentieth century American and European paintings and sculptures now in the collection of the Athenaeum. The catalogue includes brief biographies of each artist and documents the provenance, exhibition records and published references pertaining to each work. The subject, attribution and history of each work are discussed in commentaries which follow the entries. The catalogue includes over 150 illustrations arranged chronologically to illustrate both the scope and strength of the collection. The text, for convenience, separates the collection into three sections: American, European, and the Thomas Dowse Collection of Watercolors. Entries are thoroughly cross-referenced, and the catalogue includes indexes for both the subjects of portraits and previous owners. 9780934552431 ISBN 0934552436.
