During Queen Victoria's reign tiles began to be mass-produced for the first time and were used in many public buildings, churches, shops and houses for their functional properties and their decorative effect. Victorian tiles were decorated by a variety of different methods and show a diverse range of subject matter, which makes them appealing to collectors. There is also advice for tile collectors on where to buy, what to look for and how to manage their collection ## ## Hans van Lemmen taught for many years a Leeds Metropolitan University. He is a established author on the history of tiles and has lectured on the subject in Britain and elsewhere he has written or co-written Delftware Tiles, Tile furniture, Victorian Tiles, Medieval Tiles, Twentieth century Tiles and Church Tiles of the Nineteenth century for Shire, and his other books include decorative Tiles throughout the Ages, Tiles in architecture and Art Nouveau Tiles. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Number Plates - Registration marks are one of the very few unbroken links between the earliest days of the motor vehicle and the present day. In this book, the lengthy history of the humble British number plate is revealed. The system introduced at the beginning of the twentieth century had a straightforward purpose in identifying the place of origin of motor vehicles providing links to owners. As more and more vehicles came into use, the original system evolved through piecemeal development and sheer necessity to the point where adaptations changed it almost beyond recognition. This book looks back on the evolution of the British number plate, showing how the original, painstakingly developed system was gradually adjusted and modified in the light of escalating traffic growth, becoming riddled with ever more anomalies, until there was no alternative but to make a fresh start, with a brand-new system. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. First published 1990. Glossy laminated coloured cover. No bumping, maybe a tiny amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight and the inside pages are immaculate. There is a previous owners inscription. ## ## One cannot think of the seaside without recalling all one's senses. There should be sound effects ? seagulls, waves, the voices of children at play, a band in the distance; there is a distinct seaside smell seaweed, fish and chips, wet bathing costumes, suntan oil, tar, fresh and rotting fish; sight? light, above all sun and the reflected colours of sea and sky, the brightness of sand or wet pebbles, white roads, cliffs, municipal gardens, flowers, bright clothes; feel ? the heat of the sun, the sea breeze, the wetness of the sea; taste ? the salt air, ice cream, candy floss, seaside rock; the list is almost endless and each person will have a different memory to add to it. For most people the seaside holiday was part of their childhood, whether it was a brief 'day-trip' or a long fortnight away from the normal conventions of home. Seaside holidays encompass wonder, adventure, a relaxation of discipline, the company of adult members of the family and, for teenagers, quite often the first puppy love and the pain of growing up. Holiday clothes, too, were often special ? not always the same as those worn everyday at home. This book looks at the clothes worn at the seaside and in the sea up to the start of the Second World War in 1939. ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. It will give those new to a fascinating collecting field introduction to the possibilities that exist, including the parallel subject of thimble cases. The spine is tight and the inside pages are immaculate. ## ## Barometers - Many people consult a barometer before going out, to see what the weather is likely to be. Barometers measure the general pressure of the atmosphere, which changes with the weather: falling pressure generally heralds rain; rising pressure predicts fine weather. The simple mercury barometer originated in seventeenth-century Italy and was soon copied in France and Britain. In the nineteenth century demand increased for domestic and scientific barometers. They were needed for weather forecasting, and surveyors carried them to measure height above sea level. Since 1850 mercury barometers have been gradully ousted by aneroids, which are smaller and more robust but nowadays equally accurate. ## ## During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries no serious expedition set out without a barometer. At the summit of Mont Blanc pressure is barely 576 mb; in the Andes and Himalayas it falls much lower. Mountain barometers, therefore, need a longer scale than their domestic relatives and cisterns large enough to contain the falling mercury. ## ## By the 1860s weather reports could be telegraphed to central offices, enabling pressure changes associated with settled weather, rain, etc, to be charted across the country. Forecasting became a realistic proposition, and the barometer its principal tool. ## ## Admiral Fitzroy, a naval hydrographer at the Board of Trade, designed a 'fishery barometer', which by 1858 was displayed at every port to warn fishermen and other sailors of approaching bad weather. Many of these can still be seen in harbourmasters' offices and such places. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. Wolverton Viaduct, Primrose Hill Tunnel, Tring and Blisworth cuttings were all obstacles, but the greatest challenge of all to Robert Stephenson's skill courage and perseverance was Kilsby Tunnel - more than a mile long through a hill whose centre consisted of quicksand fed by underground springs and a subterranean lake. It took thirteen pumps working night and day f nineteen months to staunch the quicksand. Robert Stephenson's reputation unjustly somewhat overshadowed by that of his father, George; Robert had all his father's energy and inventive flair, but also a more sophisticated intelligence deriving from his better education. In his teens Robert was placed by his father in sole charge of surveying and engineering a section Stockton and Darlington Railway. Soon afterwards he worked on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and took charge of the world's first major locomotive works, in Newcastle. He worked for a while at some mines in Colombia the railways he engineered cover the length of Britain. The tubular bridges with which he spanned the Menai Straits and the river Conway on Chester - Holyhead line were a totally original solution to an intractable problem. Stephenson was buried in Westminster Abbey, and such was the esteem in which he was held that Queen Victoria permitted his funeral cortege to pass through Hyde Park, a rare privilege ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Old Trams- Anyone who lives in Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, or Croydon will be aware that in England the tram is making a spectacular comeback, although in some countries it never went away. In the heyday of Britain's tramways, between 1910 and 1930, almost every major town had its own tramway system. Today just four examples survive of that once ubiquitous means of popular transport, together with one closely associated electric railway, whilst one new line has been constructed, albeit as a tourist attraction. What is left from the past is being lovingly restored to life at the National Tramway Museum at Crich, and at four other museums and a municipal park that operate preserved vehicles. Many other museums house preserved tramcars and related items. This book is an introduction and guide to the tramways of Britain, their origin and development, their rise and fall, their workings and stock, what survives and where it can be found. ## ## The tramway at Blackpool is the world's oldest surviving electric tramway. Opened in 1885, it was the first street tramway in Britain to be worked by electricity. ## ## The Great Orme Tramway at Llandudno was formerly used to convey supplies to the hotel on the summit and coffins to St Tudno's churchvard. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. Second edition 1990. Matt coloured cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The landscape is superb and varied with chalk downs, vales, and heaths. There are the distinct regions of the 'Isles' of Portland and Purbeck, while the coastline includes famous features such as the Chesil Beach, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. The rocks and fossils of the area are likewise well known. It was into this landscape that prehistoric people settled and farmed, leaving a legacy of field monuments, many of national importance. This book provides a selection of these, together with other sites of a later date, historic buildings and gardens open to the public. Towns and villages are also described, and country churches. Museums of all sizes with collections of local and sometimes national importance, ranging from dinosaurs to tanks, are detailed. Dorset is the heart of the 'Wessex' of Thomas Hardy, and places associated with his books are briefly described. With the major exception of the Bournemouth conurbation in the south-east, and despite the intrusion of modern agriculture, the rural scenery of Dorset has remained little altered. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The waters of the Gulf Stream bring a generally mild climate, but the rocky coast must endure the wrath of Atlantic gales. The windswept interior gives way to high granite moors, and only the sheltered valleys provide havens for more luxuriant growth. The granite land of West Penwith is perhaps the most evocative of the Celtic west and has attracted many artists and writers. Traditional occupations have been farming, fishing and metal mining, while tourism provides an ever important, if seasonal, income. The county is renowned for its striking coastal scenery which includes Land's End and Lizard Point, the most westerly and southerly places in England. Resorts such as Newquay have developed around fine beaches, but there are many picturesque fishing coves and villages. The countryside is steeped in legends, such as those of the Celtic saints and King Arthur. This book introduces the county's very rich store of archaeological sites. Castles, historical buildings, and gardens open to the public are also described. The book includes descriptions of towns and villages, as well as museums of all sizes and variety, and a selection of country churches. Tin and copper mines have been of such importance that one chapter is devoted to the legacy of these and other industries. Despite its popularity with tourists, Cornwall offers much to those who wish to steer away from the busier centres.## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The troops had to be fed and supplied with equipment and the large numbers gave rise to correspondingly large orders and hence mass production. This book shows the wide range and great complexity of crafts that existed in Britain nearly two thousand years ago and includes sections on metal, stone, brick, textiles and leather, glass, and a variety of other crafts. The way in which metals are extracted from their ores is dealt with, as are the various techniques used to fashion metals into jewellery, household goods and other objects. The writer's own research into the brick and tile industry of Roma Britain have been drawn upon and this section contains several new ideas. The great skill of carpenters is demonstrated by the wide range of tools they used and the illustration f surviving wooden objects and timbering. There are brief sections on mosaics, was plaster, pottery, and the use of animal bone by craftsmen. The book is well illustrated with especially made photographs and drawings. ## ## About the author - Alan McWhirr is a senior lecturer at Leicester Polytechnic and since 1965 has been director of Excavations for the Cirencester Excavation Committee, in which capacity he has carried out large-scale and important excavations in Cirencester, the second largest town in Roman Britain. He was born in St Albans, the Roman Verulamium ? hence his interest in Roman archaeology. He read science at the University of Leicester, with a little archaeology and later did research and was awarded an MA. Elected a Fellow of the Society antiquaries in 1970, he has served on its council and is a member of the council of the society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. He is the author of a book on Rom Gloucestershire and has written papers for learned journals, including several on the production and distribution of tile and brick in Roman Britain, the subject of his recent research. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. First published 1999, Glossy coloured laminated cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Biscuit Tins - Advertising and consumer spending among the middle classes expanded rapidly in the mid nineteenth century. One of many ways of appealing to the new shoppers was packaging, and biscuit tins were a very discreet form of this kind of promotion. They found their way into middle-class households as Christmas presents or stocking fillers, and because they rarely displayed the name of the company or product in a prominent position they were often kept as ornaments and storage boxes and have survived well in many homes. Their appeal lies in the artistic quality and detail of their decoration, serving as a travel guide and souvenir, educational aid, and plaything. Their design demonstrates a wide knowledge and love of art and is executed with great care and attention to detail, yet their designers mostly remain anonymous. This book introduces biscuit tins, covering design, decorative techniques and the companies who made and sold them. ## ## Tracy Dolphin grew up in Yorkshire and has been collecting biscuit tins since 1982. She studied the history of design at Brighton Polytechnic, concentrating on twentieth-century design and architecture, and graduated in 1989. While there, she wrote her dissertation Biscuit Tins: Design, Manufacture and Social Context 1860?1914. She now lives in Brighton and works as an indexer and in a bookshop. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. Glossy coloured laminated cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. Slight crease in cover ## ## Corkscrews and Bottle Openers - Corkscrews appeal to collectors who appreciate the functional beauty of an instrument designed for a specific purpose, namely, to remove a cork from a wine bottle. The corkscrew was invented in the seventeenth century, the original design being based on a device for withdrawing a ramrod from a gun barrel, and since then thousands of different versions have been produced. This book traces the history of the corkscrew, illustrates many different ones, and explains how they work and how they were made. It also covers other tools used for opening bottles sealed with various caps or stoppers. ## ## Corked containers full of wine fifteen hundred years old have been found, with the wine still drinkable. These containers had bungs of wood or cork from the bark of the evergreen oak tree of the Mediterranean region. ## ## A considerable amount of physical effort is required to draw a cork well and by the lace eighteenth century keen brains were working at easing this chore. It has been estimated that between 1795, when the first patent was granted to Samuel Henshall, and the beginning of the twentieth century, over three hundred British corkscrew patents were issued. ## ## The prohibitionist Andrew Volstead is ridiculed by a few different American corkscrews, which portray him in an insulting likeness. These are much sought after by collectors. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Lifelines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles. In December 2010, Osprey Publishing, along with all the Shire titles, was acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY.
