Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Lent is one of the three 40-day seasons in the churchs year, besides Advent and the period from Easter to Pentecost. The name itself, Lent, derives from an ancient word meaning spring or long, referring to the time of year when days are beginning to lengthen and the world is turning from winter cold and dark to the warmth and promise of spring. During this time, the church calls us to a special period of prayer, self-examination and teaching and this book has been written to accompany you through that period, a time of turning from winter to spring, from death to life. Dust and Glory ranges across the whole business of living and believing, where the questions are as important as the answers and may call us to deep heart-searching. The goal is always to draw us to authentic faith a way of living and believing that is real and vulnerable, strong in knowing its limits, rooted in joy and wonder, blessed with the healing and merciful presence of God. Such faith acknowledges both the dust of our mortality and the glory that keeps breaking in with unexpected life, hope and new beginnings. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. We will be taken on an absorbing journey to help us recognise the person of Jesus in the people we meet, the conversations we have, and even in our relationship with nature and the arts. By the end of our journey, we will not only recognise Christ in others, but also in ourselves, as we model ourselves on him and share his love, compassion and peace with our neighbours, whoever they are and whatever their backgrounds. Paperback. Condition: Good. The Bible - the Word of God - and the Spirit of God are inextricably bound together, as the story of God's working throughout human history reveals. The Word of God tells the story of God's unfolding purposes for the salvation of his world, and teaches and trains us in godly Christian living. The Spirit of God inspires and illumines the text, breathes life into those who believe, and fills us with power and gifts for Christian ministry and mission. Sadly, 'Word' and 'Spirit' have in recent times become increasingly identified with divergent parts of the Church, impoverishing our witness and weakening the body of Christ. Written with passion and urgency, this book issues a timely call to Christians to focus on what unites, rather than divides, and come together in a celebration of both Word and Spirit to build each other up and further the sharing of the Gospel. It not only traces the shaping of this 'vital partnership' through Christian history, but explores systematically their shared importance in key areas of church leadership and ministry. The foreword is written by Simon Ponsonby, Pastor of Theology, St Aldates and Oxford and Dean of Studies, Oxford Centre of Church Growth. Endorsements come from The Rt Revd David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham, The Revd Dr Liz Hoare, Wycliffe Hall, and, The Revd Hugh Palmer, All Souls Langham Place. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Welcome to Quiet Spaces. This issue covers an interesting time of year. We are just finishing summer, and by the end of the issue we will have experienced harvest, Advent, Christmas and New Year and will be in the middle of winter. We try to reflect on all these seasons in this issue and to bring some stillness and peace to these packed few months, as well as some challenge and learning. In Quiet Spaces we try to provide permission to pray as suits you, to pray because you want to, not because you feel you ought to. You can feel free to explore the styles of prayer on offer, be adventurous and try something you had never thought of and accept the gifts God gives from it; even if it is a struggle and the prayer feels dry, try reflecting on the experience and see where God was during your time of prayer. I also invite you to try praying for different lengths of time. Sometimes we have only a few minutes and at other times we may have half an hour or an hour, or even-luxury-half a day. You can use the time you have available, not worrying about how short it might be. You can recognise that we all have days when we struggle to manage any more than a few arrow prayers in the midst of the busyness. I was challenged recently when someone asked if I saw prayer as homework, as something to be done that was set and had to be completed or I would get into trouble. For many of us prayer can become like that, a duty rather than a joy. I'm sure God does not intend time spent with him to be entered into other than from love for him and a desire to spend time with him. The desire to meet with him is the first step. Remember that God delights in your friendship and longs to spend time with you. He cherishes the time you have together rather than bearing a grudge for the time you don't spend with him. So receive his forgiveness and turn to him. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This resource contains ten Bible stories, each told from the point of view of a child and followed by guided meditations. The stories are taken from the Gospel accounts and include key Bible verses. The correct historical and social background is used in order to enrich the child's understanding and to help the story come alive. The meditations are followed by directed questions to facilitate the child's experience of entering the story itself and an invitation to 'look out' of the story and take its meaning into the rest of the day. All the material has been thoroughly field tested with 6-10s, the results of which are included in the book. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. An octogenarian takes a wryly humorous look at what it's like to be old in an era of the relentlessly new. Turning to the Bible, he explores its store of timeless wisdom, encouragement and reassurance about what it has always meant to grow old and be old. The book is structured around a series of fascinating biblical pictures, from the legendary Methuselah to the feisty Sarah and the great leader Moses, from the picture of inevitable decline as the Preacher saw it in Ecclesiastes to the glorious Nunc Dimittis of old Simeon in the Temple. 'At the end of the day' is a well-worn phrase - yet seeing life as a single day, with dawn, noon, sunny afternoon, twilight and then darkness and sleep, provides a sort of contracted chronology of a journey we are all taking. Those who are at, or beyond, tea-time - as well as their friends and family - may find this book offers an essentially optimistic, positive and attractive picture of both the present and the future. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Seven out of ten Christian leaders feel overworked, four in ten suffer financial pressures, only two in ten have had management training, and 1,500 give up their job over a ten-year period. At the same time, as financial restrictions affect the availability of full-time ministers, more people are needed for leadership roles in local congregations, for every area of church work. This book faces the challenge of raising up new leaders and helping existing leaders to mature, using the model for growing leaders at the heart of the Arrow Leadership Programme, a ministry of the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS). It comprehensively surveys leadership skills and styles, discerning our personal calling, avoiding the 'red zone' of stress, developing character, and living as part of the community of God's people. The book contains an introduction and 12 chapters, in six sections, plus conclusion, epilogue and resources section: Part 1: Leadership today Part 2: Growing leaders know they're chosen Part 3: Growing leaders discern God's call Part 4: Growing leaders develop Christ-like character Part 5: Growing leaders cultivate competence Part 6: Growing leaders lead in community. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The age-old practice of pilgrimage is more popular today than it has been for centuries. At a time when the Church - indeed, Christianity itself - seems increasingly exiled and estranged from our culture, more and more people are treading the ancient pilgrim routes, whether they are committed Christians, spiritual seekers or simply curious. And the renewal and refreshment of faith that they find on their journey often outweighs what happens in many churches. In this book, Andrew Jones shows how pilgrimage has the power to awaken those at all stages of belief to remembering the story of God's creating and redeeming work in history, the story that tells us who we are, where we have come from and where we are going. The act of remembering it not only offers a life-transforming way out of exile but points to the way home, to the place where we can live an authentic and balanced life. The book concludes with a focus on eight popular places of pilgrimage in the British Isles, drawing out lessons from their history and spiritual heritage that can encourage and inspire us on our own faith journeys. Andrew Jones writes: More people than ever before are going on retreats. Many of them are not those who attend church every Sunday and almost all of them are seeking space, time and fellowship for rest, peace, breathing space, perspective and spirituality. These are the things that enable the mind and heart to be joined in that inner place where God is present to every human being. All of us have this inner place; a retreat is an opportunity for a given group of people to discover that place, gently and carefully, in an environment of peace and beauty. Similarly, pilgrimage has been at the heart of human spirituality since the beginning of time. Today, many people are searching for those traditions that inspired early Christians, particularly at times when the faith was vibrant. The increasing pilgrimage traffic shows that modern-day Christians are rediscovering the historical importance and significance of pilgrimage - it's an experience that often provides that vital link between the inner journey of the heart and the outer pilgrimage of life. In my new book Pilgrimage: the journey to remembering our story I explore how pilgrimage wakens people at all stages of belief to remembering the story of God's creating and redeeming work in history. It helps to tell us who we are, where we have come from and where we are going. I also make the claim that the contemporary church seems increasingly and tragically exiled and estranged from our culture. Significantly, this act of remembering - pivotal to pilgrimage - not only offers a life-transforming way out of that exile situation but points to the way 'home'. Many places of pilgrimage beckon and draw not only people but also that inner place within people. They are described by some as 'thin places' - where the boundary between heaven and earth hardly exists at all! Bringing the experience of retreat, pilgrimage and that worrying exile place that much of the contemporary church finds itself in together could prove transfiguring and transforming. It may even be an opportunity for our own faith and Christian discipleship to be refreshed and challenged. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
