Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Pp. 46, (1). Essay by Thomas McEvilley. Illustrated with black and white photographs of Levine's billboards, reprinted newspaper clippings concerning the outrage over his work, etc. Includes a transcribed conversation between Levine and Declan McMonagle. Bound in illustrated stiff wraps. Slight soiling to cover due to handling, else Fine. A concise documentation of the furor Levine created with the seemingly innocuous statements, accompanied by the juxtaposition of artistic archetypes, that beset Ireland and England in the early 1980s. His provocative work was highly effective in triggering conversations about the role of belief systems, art and the public space. Catalog is now housed in a clear, removable archival sleeve with acid-free backing.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book commemorates A Work for the North Sea, an Artangel commissioned project by the artist Bethan Huws, which took place in Northumberland in 1993. Where the end of the land meets the edge of the water, eight Bulgarian women sang to the North Sea. The women were the Bistritsa Babi (Bistritsa Grandmothers), whose repertoire included traditional songs such as Vai Dudole (A Prayer for Rain) and Sultz Saide (for the Sunset). They sang at the edge of the North Sea near Craster on the unspoilt Northumbrian coastline over three evenings in late July. Beginning at the turning of the tide, as the repertoire of songs built, the tide began to recede. Pitched into the wind, these haunting melodies combined with the rumbling of the sea to create a unique polyphony of sound and voice. A Work for the North Sea brought a tradition from the cradle of European civilisation to its Northern edge. Documents Huws' seminal performance of "Singing to the Sea", which took place in 1993 on a beach near Alnwick in Northumberland. This work includes an interview with the artist. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Longplayer is a 1000-year musical composition that runs continuously and without repetition from its start on 1 January 2000 until its completion on 31 December 2999. Conceived by musician/composer Jem Finer, Longplayer is an attempt to make sense of such a span of time. Emanating from one present moment to the unfolding future of the next 1000 years, it provides a projection of growth and change. Through an exploration of generative forms of music, rooted in the fields of artificial life and complexity, Finer has developed a system that results in an ever-evolving piece of music. This book focuses on the exploration of different notions of time and our expectations about duration in music. It also explores the connection between a work like Longplayer and its reliance on mathematical and technological sciences, and the role of change. It is accompanied by a 12 vinyl with three 20-minute fragments of the music generated by Longplayer. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. "In the great prison where I was then incarcerated, I was merely the figure and the letter of a little cell in a long gallery. One of a thousand lifeless numbers, as of a thousand lifeless lives." - Oscar Wilde, De Profundis Inside: Artists and Writers in Reading Prison brought together works by 23 artists and writers installed inside the empty Reading Prison, where Oscar Wilde was incarcerated between 1895-97, and the extraordinary extended letter De Profundis which he wrote in his prison cell. This book includes extensive excerpts from De Profundis alongside new letters by Ai Weiwei, Tahmima Anam, Anne Carson, Joe Dunthorne, Deborah Levy, Danny Morrison, Gillian Slovo, Binyavanga Wainaina and Jeanette Winterson reflecting on real and imaginary separations. Also featured are colour photographs of works installed inside Reading Prison by artists including Vija Celmins, Marlene Dumas, Richard Hamilton, Nan Goldin, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roni Horn, Steve McQueen, and Wolfgang Tillmans. Includes and introduction by James Lingwood and Michael Morris. Published alongside an exhibition at Reading Prison, 4 September - 4 December 2016. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In Madison Square Park in New York, and subsequently in Soho Square, the heart of London's media world, video artist Tony Oursler created a spectral audio-visual experience for an image-saturated society. Conceived as a kind of psycho-landscape, The Influence Machine delves deep into the history of media, rousing long-forgotten spirits and setting them to roam about both squares at night. The ghosts of the Fox Sisters, who made telegraphic contact with the spirit world in the mid-19th century, haunted alongside the ghost of television pioneer John Logie Baird. This book brings together Tony Oursler's most elaborate deep media projects in an illustrated time line, the Timestream, and accompanying texts elaborate on the phantasmagorias of the late 18th century, its contemporary equivalents, and the influence of spiritualism within the general development of media. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. And Europe Will Be Stunned brings together for the first time the compelling trilogy of films made by Yael Bartana in Warsaw in Poland between 2007 and 2011. The same year, Bartana became the first non-national to exhibit in the Polish Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. Revolving around the activities of the Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland, a group that calls for the return of three million Jews to Poland, Bartana's films traverse a landscape scarred by the histories of competing nationalisms and nightmares across Europe and the Middle East. An extensive sequence of colour stills from the three films - Mary Koszmary (Nightmares), Mur i Wieza (Wall and Tower), and Zamach (Assassination) - is accompanied by transcriptions of the speeches in the films and various essays. Co-published by Artangel with Ikon, Birmingham; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek; Museum of Modern Art Warsaw; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
