Illustrated printed wrappers, small 8vo, 21 cm, 147 pp, ills. 311 entries. From the foreword: "The only French popular prints that are at all familiar in this country are those produced at Epinal. Images d'Epinal are still in production and modern impressions are easily obtainable. Epinal was, however, only one centre among many, and this exhibition gives a good indication of the great richness of the production from all over France during several centuries. The prints, besides being curious, beautiful and entertaining, are a vital source of information about political, religious and social attitudes in France at different periods. The range in theme, iconography, style and treatment is very wide, with constant cross-reference to contemporary 'fine' art. The difficulty, and falseness, of attempting a total separation of popular and 'fine' engravings is recognised in the planning of the exhibition in which a number of engravings by fine artists is included to show how ideas and styles were adapted for the popular market." Good.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 144 pp, ills. 114 entries. From the introduction: ". this commemorative exhibition aims to show something of Johnson's versatility as a thinker and writer, and his profound humanity, which have attracted followers and admirers here and abroad. The story of the bookseller's son from Lichfield, awkward looking, half blind, without a degree, who, without any support, started his career in London as a Grub Street hack and became a 'literary colossus', is still more captivating if told in its proper sequence. The exhibition therefore follows roughly a chronological pattern, and is divided in eight sections of which the first seven concern his life, and the last some biographies by his contemporaries. It focuses on two main features: (i) his method and career as a writer, and (2) the principal portraits of him from life." Contents include: 1 Lichfield, Oxford, and the Midlands; 2 First years in London; 3 Lexicographer; 4 Widower; 5 Pension, Boswell, and The Club; 6 The Thrales and Streatham Park; 7 Last years; 8 Early biographies; Select Bibliography. Edition of 1500 copies printed at the Curwen press. Decorative printed wrappers, 8vo, 25 cm, 30, [1] pp, 16 plates. 131 items. From the foreword: "The collection of bookbindings which Major J. R. Abbey has formed during the past fifteen years now ranks as one of the finest in the world. He has bought extensively from many famous collections, the Rahir, Aldenham, Mencing, Moss, Clumber, Schiff, Ham House, and Dyson Perrins, which have been dispersed in the sale-room. But unlike many collectors of old bindings, of which he owns a rich and representative collection, he has also bought and commissioned bindings from living craftsmen. He is probably the only English bibliophile to possess a group of contemporary French bindings and if the art were not virtually dead in this country he would clearly be its Maecenas, for he has had fourteen bindings made for this exhibition. The Arts Council is deeply grateful to him for the opportunity of showing this selection from his modern bindings and thus calling attention to the need for a revival of this forgotten craft, which has so long and honourable a history." Wrappers a little soiled, otherwise Good.

Book
Cloth, 4to, 28 cm, 160 pp, plates, ills (many colour). From the blurb: - ".the city's collection of French paintings, housed in the main art gallery at Kelvingrove, is undoubtedly of international significance. The collection is particularly strong in paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries from the Realist, Barbizon, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist schools, but includes, too, a superb 15th-century work by the Master of Moulins, and fine 17th-century works by Vouet and Dughet. Every one of the French oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and pastels in Glasgow's collection at Kelvingrove is illustrated in this book. One hundred and twenty-two of the pictures are shown in black and white and include works by Daumier, Lhermitte, Simon and Monticelli, while 88 are in colour, including one of the city's two van Goghs, a superb portrait of Alexander Reid, one of the dealers who helped shape Glasgow's taste for French works. Among the many artists whose work is in the collection and also depicted in colour are Millet, Corot, Fantin-Latour, Seurat, Matisse, Derain, Monet, Gauguin, and Picasso. Each picture is accompanied by the artist's name and dates, the title of the painting and its date, if known, its size, and its provenance. There is also a subject index, and, for those with a more scholarly interest, a numerical index which relates each painting's current attribution to that in the three previous catalogues of French pictures." Fine in Very Good dustwrapper.
