Softbound. Condition: Very Good. Octavo, glossy paper covers, x, 358 pp., notes, bibliography, index Translated from the Italian by Nicola Rudge Iannelli. "Hundred's of Ghettos were created throughout eastern Europe by the Germans and their allies during the Second World War. Some were large - the one in Warsaw held almost half a million people in 1942 - others were very small. All had the purpose of holding Jews separate from the rest of the population, almost invariably in extraordinarily deprived, squalid and crowded conditions. They became antechambers to the death camps but that purpose was not clear to most of their inhabitants. These 'cities within cities' merit consideration, then , not just as staging points in the extermination of Europena Jewry but as communities in their own right, with their own dynamics, in which elements of traditional pre-war Jewish society continued to exist. There have been some studies of the largest ghettos - Warsaw and Lodz - and a few accounts of some of the smaller ones; but very little examniation of the ghettos as a whole. This pioneering new history draws heavily on the testimonies of those who suffered in them, making use of a wide range of diaries and memoirs (and exploring the problems inherent in such sources). Other documentary sources - particularly German - are also use, but the intention is to look at the ghettos 'from below', focusing on behavior, values and suffering, as well as on the heroism and the passiveness of the Jewish communities. Never before has personal testimony been so extensively used and systematically evaluated to write a history of the East European ghettos." - from the cover copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Two chap numbers in ToC list ringed for reading otherwise sound, tight, clean copy. The second edition of this deservedly popular account follows its predecessor in considering seven broad, interrelated themes: the environment; people; class; poverty and welfare; life and leisure; religion and education. But it differs in its extended chronology (the considerable changes in society between 1985 and 1997 are now part of the picture) and in its incorporation of new currents in historical writing on matters such as the language of class, the position of women, and secularisation. Treatment of topics is genuinely "British" insofar as the state of research permits, though the different histories of England, Scotland and Wales are fully recognized. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Reprint Edition. The Arnold History of Britain. In British history the period from 1688 to 1832 is often called the "long eighteenth century" though it defies easy characterization. Blending narrative chapters with more solid analysis, this book provides a fresh and cogent account of the period and nuanced view of the contours of the age. The 2003 reprint edition. Distributed in the United States by Oxford University Press Inc. A clean and tight copy.
