Known as America's 'Finest City,' it contains a wealth of history--evolutionary as well as revolutionary--in its crime files. Among those are the founder of the California wine industry, Judge Roy Bean, a black officer before the Emancipation Proclamation, a 19th-century Native American police chief, and women who had the power to arrest before they had the right to vote. Major incidents include massive floods, civil unrest, wildfires, and some of the largest police gun battles in history. San Diego also witnessed mass murder, America's first major school shooting, the worst aviation disaster in American history, and the deadliest streets, per capita, to police. How the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) handled it all became textbook for many other police agencies. 130 pp. Englisch.

As settlers arrived and began to harness the falls as a resource, the population climbed. Small hamlets, including Bellevue, Clarksville, Schlosser, and Manchester, grew to become the villages of Suspension Bridge and Niagara Falls, which were incorporated in March 1892 into the current city of Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls: 1850-2000 depicts the natural beauty of the falls, the emergence of the booming tourism trade, and the advances of electrical technology that have relied on the mighty falls' power. Many hands have crafted and bent steel to span the Niagara Gorge while many others fought to keep industry from turning nature into asphalt. Culled from the archives of the Niagara Falls Public Library's Local History Department, these images represent the people, from those stepping close to the brink in amazement and awe to those who live and work within the roar of Niagara Falls, and places that make up the landscape that is Niagara's past. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -For many immigrants to Baton Rouge, being buried in the highlands of their European homes was a dream. Recognizing that this desire was unlikely to come to fruition, they christened the bluff above the Mississippi River south of the town as 'Highland' and established Highland Cemetery in 1819. The military fort had a burial ground; churches established cemeteries; owners, family members, and slaves were buried on the plantations; towns offered municipal cemeteries and paupers' plots; and families distant from towns created family cemeteries. Magnolia Cemetery was established for white citizens in 1852. Sweet Olive and the Lutheran Cemeteries were for free people of color and slaves. St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, established in 1826, did not discriminate on race but on religious affiliation, as did the Jewish cemetery. Civil War Union soldiers were separated from Confederates buried in Magnolia Cemetery and interred in the Baton Rouge National Cemetery. In 1921, Roselawn Park Cemetery represented the beginning of cemeteries as business. Beautiful statuary, elaborate tombstones and memorials, unique monuments to the departed, and lush gardens accentuate Baton Rouge's cities of the dead. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Navasota is named for the nearby Navasota River. The naming of the river is linked, most plausibly, to an encounter on its banks in the 1540s between Indians and a Spanish expedition led initially by the then-deceased Hernando de Soto. Indians believed that spirits of the dead were associated with rivers. Accordingly, though he was interred earlier in the Mississippi River, the Indians saw de Soto's spirit reborn in their river, hence the legendary term 'Nativity de Soto,' shortened to Navasota. As this book shows, the history of Navasota has revolved around the theme of birth. It stands in the Cradle of Texas, associated endemically with the founding of Spanish Texas and later with the birth of the Republic of Texas. At the crossroads of Texas, Navasotians have pioneered new industries while moderating equilibrium between a genteel society bent on expanding the mind and a ruffian element tamed only at the hands of an icon in American folklore. 130 pp. Englisch.

Little has been shared about this intimate and unique community that is characterized by eclectic architecture, diverse individuals, and a strong sense of community. It is hard to imagine Seattle without its floating homes, but there was a period of time when the community was considered undesirable and was almost driven from the city shores. This book explores the community history of floating homes in Seattle, tales from life on the dock, and the ongoing challenges of being a fringe neighborhood in the urban context of the city. 130 pp. Englisch.

Rich in history and natural beauty, its glacial soil has been farmed for at least 1,000 years. The farmers of Middletown were hardworking men and women who were interested in art, culture, and politics. Also passionate about horses, they produced the first American horse breed, the Narragansett Pacer. Although farming is no longer a major occupation, a farming renaissance is under way, generated by organic and local foods movements. Over the years, the Navy has become the largest employer on the island, having established facilities there during World War II. The scenic beauty of Middletown has caused a large section of it to be called 'Paradise.' This unique region, inspiration to generations of artists, has played an important part in the history of American art. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the mid-1800s, the Napa River brought people to Napa City from around the world, attracted by the beauty and bounty of the valley. Riverboat captains played a major role in creating the material wealth of the city as their vessels plied the waters of San Francisco Bay carrying freight and passengers. As the powerhouse of industry, the river attracted several tanneries that needed water to make the now famous 'Nappa' leather. Napa became a leather colony with the growth of shoe, glove, and glue factories. The river became a key transportation artery, and its channel became the focus of greater dredging to allow larger ships to anchor downtown. No longer a natural river able to meander, it frequently overran its banks, flooding towns. Industry, agricultural runoff, and population growth caused the Napa River to become polluted and neglected into the 20th century. Today, the Napa River is the centerpiece of downtown renewal. A 'Living River' strategy is bringing back its vitality along with fish and wildlife populations, helping the river to regain its importance. 130 pp. Englisch.

Milam County was carved from the extensive Robertson's Colony in 1852, and it flourished with immigrants eager to move on after the Civil War severed the nation. For many, Rockdale was an easy choice for a new home because it was the end of the line. The fertile land, pleasant climate, and ample water attracted settlers, many of whom were of German, Czech, and Wendish descent. The presence of large deposits of lignite brought mining onto the scene in the early 1900s. From 1954 until 2009, the Aluminum Company of America operated a large plant that was six miles from Rockdale, which further changed the economy. The settlers were by no means the first humans to inhabit this land. 130 pp. Englisch.

An early aviator, Chicagoan Octave Chanute, glided his aircraft over the dunes almost 10 years before the Wright brothers' flight at Kitty Hawk, and botanist Henry Chandler Cowles studied plant succession in Miller Woods, now part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Like its citizens, Miller Beach's architecture is diverse, with historic park buildings designed by George W. Maher: the Marquette Park Pavilion and the Gary Bathing Beach Bathhouse, recently renovated as a museum that honors Chanute and the Tuskegee Airmen. Miller Beach contains other historic structures: Miller Town Hall dates to 1911, the old railroad depot houses a restaurant, the 1910 Miller School is home to a community arts group, and Ayers Realtors remains in its 1926 building. Miller Beach is now a part of Gary, Indiana, and the draw of the beach remains a timeless part of its past, present, and future. 130 pp. Englisch.

For many families, however, it has always been a constant; some Sunset Hills families are seventh-generation residents on land that was granted or purchased early in America's history. Early settlers were drawn to this community by the salt springs and clay mines. Indian tribes also utilized this area as an early regional site for trade and multi-tribal meetings along the Meramec River. The Meramec Landing Site was historically significant to both the tribes and the settlers, and the community formed eastward from this spot on the river, toward St. Louis. Today, the city encompasses over nine square miles. Largely considered a commuter suburb for St. Louis, Sunset Hills possesses its own rich history and strong sense of community. 130 pp. Englisch.

Originally known for abundant fishing and hunting, the lake is the site of an ancient Native American fish weir that predates the pyramids. The settlers who established the town were also industrious and established businesses providing a variety of products, including silk, leather, lumber, and ice. The arrival of the railroad in 1855 further increased local industry and boosted tourism by making the lake accessible to tourists and sportsmen. As fishermen and vacationers alike came to Newport, hotels and camps flourished. The GAR property, Camp Benson, was a popular destination--particularly the Pavilion dance hall. In 1891, a woolen mill and condensed milk plant were built, both of which were vital to the local economy well into the 20th century. In recent decades, Newport has reclaimed some of its natural heritage by making major efforts to restore Lake Sebasticook and the East Branch of the Sebasticook River. 130 pp. Englisch.

This, in turn, set some of the nation's great thinkers on the path to coming up with answers to alleviate the ill effects of a rapidly industrializing and urbanizing society. Frederick Law Olmsted's answer in 1868 was the conception of a suburb for Chicago that combined the best aspects of urban life with that of rural life. So, he created Riverside, an ideal environment for civilization to flourish. 130 pp. Englisch.

Urbanna was officially established in 1706 by the assembly, which named the town Burgh of Urbanna, Latin for 'City of Anne,' after Queen Anne of England. Throughout the colonial period, the town was a tobacco inspection port. It was invaded by the British during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and then by Union troops during the Civil War. After the Civil War, oysters from the Rappahannock River became the primary source of income for residents until the 1960s. Originally called South Groton, the town thrived as tanneries, vinegar factories, sawmills, and other industries settled in the area. The rapid economic development and population growth led to the formation of the Town of Ayer in 1871, named for Dr. James Cook Ayer, a producer of hair tonic and patent medicines who had donated money to the town. Ayer thrived, becoming a rail hub for transporting goods and passengers. In 1917, the War Department leased local land to build a new Army training area, Camp Devens, and its opening greatly boosted both Ayer's population and economy. The name changed from Camp Devens to Fort Devens in 1931. Since the closing of Fort Devens in 1996 and the loss of the local support- and service-oriented economy, Ayer has relied on its manufacturing economy to grow and thrive with help from the new commercial and industrial complex at the former Fort Devens site. In addition to Pan Am Southern railroad facilities, Ayer is home to Cain's food products, the Pepsi Bottling Company, and other manufacturing facilities. 130 pp. Englisch.

The first white settlement was built in 1832, and the fur-trading post at the bend in the river, then known as Oakestown, was settled before the city of Grand Rapids with the expectation that Oakestown would be one of the area's larger cities. Plaster mining prospered throughout the area until an accident filled the White Plaster Mill with water, creating the present-day Big Spring Lake. Eventually, farming, lumbering, and a small oil industry replaced plaster mining as the local source of commerce. Upon declaration of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the Ohio Company of Associates bought millions of acres of land to sell to land-hungry easterners. In 1788, the first boat of new settlers arrived in Marietta, Ohio. By 1797, wars with the Native Americans had ended and more land became available. When they got here, settlers found some rich farmland, but more importantly they discovered salt, coal, clay and a need for industry to provide for the needs of the people. Opportunities abounded to make fortunes in other places from the resources readily available locally. Central to the development of Athens County was the vision people had years before the first settlers arrived; they dreamed of and made provisions for a university in the new territory. Today, more than 200 years later, Ohio University thrives in the city of Athens. 130 pp. Englisch.

With the arrival of pioneers, its landscape gave way to an industrial scene, which quickly included the railroad. Trains delivered countless cars into what would become the Pearl District. They were first divided up in the railroad yard, and then switch engines transported the vehicles to the doors of local trade buildings. As industry moved out to the suburbs, the need for large rail yards and their storage facilities was greatly reduced in the Pearl. This opened the door for redevelopment of the district, which first began along NW Twenty-third Avenue and spread into the adjacent warehouses and rail yards north of Burnside, between NW Fourteenth Avenue and the Willamette River. Over the last 25 years, the former industrial landscape has transitioned into a dynamic residential and commercial neighborhood known as the Pearl District. 130 pp. Englisch.

The town was the first permanent Massachusetts settlement north of the Merrimack River; however, Dracut Revisited explores more closely the town's recent 20th-century history. Throughout the years, Dracut citizens have been industry employees at places such as Beaver Brook Mills and the Dracut Navy Yard. The town had the region's premier resort at Lake Mascuppic, the Lakeview Ballroom. It has also been home to numerous dairy farms, including Shaw Farm, which celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2008 and is one of a handful of active dairy farms that remain in the state. Dracut has a long record of serving in the nation's conflicts, from the American Revolution to September 11, 2001. Bordered by the Savannah River to the east, the Broad River to the north, and the Little River to the south, Lincoln County quickly became a sports and recreational paradise. With the construction of Clark Hill Lake, the population increased, as did the quality of education and life. Fortunately, most of the families that populated Lincoln County are still here. Even NFL (not from Lincoln) folks settle down, become Lincoln High School Red Devil football fans, and begin to believe the small county of Lincoln and the county seat of Lincolnton really are paradise. 130 pp. Englisch.

The surrounding thick forests and lack of roads meant the area was accessible only by water. The year 1889 also saw the building of the first wharf, allowing numerous passengers and freight steamers of the Mosquito Fleet (so called because its numbers were said to resemble a swarm of mosquitoes) to stop at Sidney, thus facilitating the growth of the town. In December 1890, three months after Sidney's incorporation, the federal government approved Sinclair Inlet as the location for a Pacific Northwest shipyard. Early major developments determined the town's future: moving the county seat from Port Madison to Sidney, renaming the town Port Orchard, and locating the Washington State Veterans Home near Port Orchard. 130 pp. Englisch.

With three railways, Corry quickly grew. Though it did not have any oil wells, Corry became the most important transportation center in the oil region. Factories sprang up in this transportation hub, making products from wooden butter pails to parts for the space program. The Corry State Fish Hatchery, still in operation, is the oldest fish hatchery east of the Mississippi River. Ferdinand Johnson, known for drawing the Moon Mullins comic strip; Gen. Clarence Shoop, vice president of Hughes Aircraft Company; and Inez Mecusker, a world-famous opera star who sang for both Napoleon III and Queen Victoria of England, were all born in the Corry area. 130 pp. Englisch.
