Glossy pages. 397 illustrations (209 in full glossy color). many full page full color plates. Front blank has neatly written name of previous owner and his fist initial is artistically drawn on the title page. With notes. catalogue of the Hebrew manuscripts containing illustrations used as the basis for this book. Bibliography. index of the works contained in the Hebrew manuscripts mentioned in the catalogue. chronological index of the Hebrew manuscripts mentioned in the catalogue. The miniatures which enhance medieval Hebrew manuscripts, whether in prayerbooks, ceremonials for feast days, ritual, legal or philosophical treatises, reflect various aspects of Jewish life during the period. In addition to religious and ceremonial practices, the many facets of everyday life in the family, in cities and in the countryside are treated as are social and economic activities at all levels and in all professions. Drawing upon the surviving miniatures in illuminated Hebrew manuscripts as primary source material, Therese and Mendel Metzger have reconstructed a detailed account of Jewish life in Europe during the Middle Ages. The volume is divided into five sections which encompass historic and geographic background, everyday surroundings, family life and education, social and economic life and religious activity. The geographic limitations of the study correspond to the sporadic localization of surviving documents. The extant miniatures are traceable to the north and east of France, the Germanic Rhine Valley and southern States such as Bavaria and Italy from Lombardy to Naples and Corfu. The time period covered is similarly restricted; the temporal development of Jewish culture during the period is derived from the analysis of architecture and clothing styles illustrated in the miniatures. Jewish Life in the Middle Ages is a superb scholarly study of Jewish culture, as seen by the Jews themselves and by Christians.

The cultural development of India spans a period of more than ten thousand years. From the beginning, folk art - as distinct from the art of the royal courts and temple towns - has played a constant and important role. The influence of folk art upon the Indian cultural sphere remains no less potent today than in the past. Indian Folk Art represents the first attempt to present this history: first, as an uninterrupted tradition extending back more than twelve millennia and second, as the art of the Indian people in the broadest sense - the people who first settled the subcontinent.
