Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Paperback Edition. Penguin Catalogue No. A557. A 1966 reprint of the first UK paperback edition - originally published in paperback in 1962. First published in hardback by Edward Arnold in 1927. ***A very good copy in black printed turquoise-blue and white wrappers. Covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling. Bottom corner of front cover creased, with a couple of small indentations also on the front cover. ***173 pages, plus an Index at the back of the book. 180mm x 110mm. ***Contents: Notes, 1. Introductory, 2. The Story, 3. People, 4. People (continued), 5. The Plot, 6. Fantasy, 7. Prophecy, 8. Pattern and Rhythm, 9. Conclusion, Index. ***'The effort to see through novels, not round them - that is how E. M. Forster describes the driving force behind this book. He discards the weighty 'historical' view with its cumbersome apparatus of 'tendencies', 'influences', and 'periods'. Instead we are to imagine all novelists at work together in a circular room. With this welcome freshness of approach the author of "A Passage to India" discusses the various ways we can look at a novel.' [Quote taken from the back cover]. ***'Edward Morgan Forster OM CH (1 Jan 1879 - 7 Jun 1970) was an English fiction writer, essayist and librettist. Many of his novels examine class difference and hypocrisy, including A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924). The last brought him his greatest success. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 16 separate years.' ***'"Aspects of the Novel" was compiled from a series of lectures delivered by E. M. Forster at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1927, in which he discussed the English language novel. By using examples from classic texts, he highlights the seven universal aspects of the novel: story, characters, plot, fantasy, prophecy, pattern, and rhythm. Some critics have taken issue with the fact that Forster, as a renowned novelist, formulated a normative theory of how to write prose. W. Somerset Maugham commented that, having read the book, "I learned that the only way to write novels was like Mr. E. M. Forster." Virginia Woolf, reviewing "Aspects of the Novel" in Nation and Athenaeum, on the other hand, praised some aspects of the book. According to Woolf, Forster, unlike other male critics, never exercises stern authority to save the lady (i.e. fiction), he merely acts as a casual friend who happens to have been admitted into the bedroom.' Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Paperback Edition. A first printing of the first UK paperback edition - the third in the Penguin Hansard series - published as a paperback original on 11th March 1941 [the book states February 1941 but publication was delayed due to the war] - Penguin Catalogue No. H.3 - unpriced [the price only appeared on the dustwrapper for these wartime editions, not on the front cover]. This was the third title to be published in Penguin's Hansard series, which ran to just six volumes in all. ***A very good copy in illustrated dark blue and white card wrappers, with the original Penguin style of horizontal stripes. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling but are largely clean and unmarked. No major faults - just some light rubbing and creasing to the edges of the covers. The spine just has some light wear but no reading creases. There is no reading lean to the binding. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with no inscriptions and no serious creases or tears - just some light creasing to the top corners of most pages. The paper stock is only slightly tanned with age. No foxing. Without the original dustwrapper [assuming one was issued]. ***288 pages including a 4pp Index to Speakers at the back of the book. 180mm x 110mm. ***The Penguin Hansard - Taken verbatim from the House of Commons Official Report of Parliamentary Debates - 'This was an ambitious project attempting to bring the words of political leaders spoken in Parliament to the people. H1 - From Chamberlain to Churchill appeared in August 1940. The final volume, H6 - The War Moves East, was issued in September 1942. Penguin experimented with trying to bring current politics to the people. The 'official' Parliamentary record Hansard only sold a few hundred copies. Allen Lane wanted to bring these important war-time debates into popular readership. Unfortunately, this special series of books did not stimulate the public and not many were sold. They are thus rather scarce these days. The cover design is similar to that of Penguin Specials but in the more familiar colours of the Pelican series - of blue and white.' [Penguin First Editions site] ***A first printing of this wartime Penguin Hansard paperback in very nice collectable condition. Copies of these fragile books, published at the height of the Second World War, are quite scarce now. Impressive that an 80 year old paperback has survived in such nice condition. A rare survivor. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
