Hardback: Flexible Leatherette. This is a travel journal by Scotsman James Boswell first published in 1785. In 1773, Boswell had enticed his English friend Samuel Johnson to accompany him on a tour through the highlands and western islands of Scotland. Johnson was then in his mid-sixties and much esteemed for his literary works and his Dictionary. The two travellers set out from Edinburgh and skirted the eastern and northeastern coasts of Scotland, passing through St Andrews, Aberdeen and Inverness. They then passed into the highlands and spent several weeks on various islands in the Hebrides, including Skye, Coll, and Mull. After a visit to Boswell's estate at Auchinleck, the travellers returned to Edinburgh. Johnson published his recollections, Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland on 18 January 1775. It was a publishing success drawing much praise and discussion - and some critical remarks, especially for some of Johnson's sceptical asides questioning the authenticity of the 'Ossian' poems, which were then all the rage. After Johnson's death in 1784, Boswell published his own Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. This work was based on a diary Boswell had kept during the tour and included detailed descriptions of where he and Johnson had gone and - course - what Johnson had said. The Journal was to serve as a sort of teaser for the longer biography Boswell was preparing for publication, his celebrated Life of Samuel Johnson. Boswell's Journal and Johnson's Journey make an interesting study in contrasts. Johnson considers things philosophically and maintains a high level of generality. Boswell's approach is more anecdotal, even gossipy, and succeeds in large part because of Boswell's keen eye and ear for detail. Both accounts are still widely read and admired today. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; xx, 431 pages.

Soft Cover/Stapled. Condition: Very Good. Issue No. 269. Text/Near New, showing faint margin discoloration. Soft cover/VG. Staples w/rusting. 342 issues of Buffalo Bill Novels were printed by Aldine Publishing from October 1916 through 1932, A bi-monthly, British boy's pulp magazine, marketed at 4d., with cover art by Robert Prowse. This copy, less publishing date, is issue No. 269, and features a rifled mountain man with a mountain goat. Despite its name, the stories did not always star Buffalo Bill, but were set in the Old West and feature plenty of cowboys and Indians. This story commences with 4 men, in the month of August, pitching camp on a crater of northern peak high "above the level of the great plains of Nebraska". The party was composed of adventurer Sir Henry, his companion of "wanderings", Morton, a 19 year-old Canadadian, and an ear-less mountain man armed with "silver-mounted revolvers, knife, tomahawk, and Spencer rifle". There was bad blood between Sir Henry and Morton, and the mountain man claimed to have led John C. Freemont and Kit Carson to the very same camp site. .

Walton made significant contributions to seventeenth-century biographical writing throughout his career. His leisurely labours as a biographer seem to have grown out of his devotion to angling. It was probably as an angler that he made the acquaintance of Sir Henry Wotton, but it is clear that Walton had more than a love of fishing and a humorous temper to recommend him to Wotton's friendship. At any rate, Wotton, who had intended to write the life of John Donne, and had already corresponded with Walton on the subject, left the task to him. Walton had already contributed an elegy to the 1633 edition of Donne's poems, and he completed and published the life, much to the satisfaction of the most learned critics, in 1640. Sir Henry Wotton dying in 1639, Walton undertook his life also; it was finished in 1642 and published in 1651 as a preface to the volume Reliquiae Wottonianae. His life of Hooker was published in 1665, and that of George Herbert in 1670, the latter coinciding with a collected edition of Walton's biographical writings, The Lives of Dr. John Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, Mr. Richard Hooker, Mr. George Herbert (1670, 1675). His life of Bishop Robert Sanderson appeared in 1678. All these subjects were endeared to Walton by a certain gentleness of disposition and cheerful piety; three of them at leastDonne, Wotton and Herbertwere anglers. Walton studied these men's lives in detail, and provides many insights into their character. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; xv, 206 + 330 pages.
