Hardcover. Black boards with gilt lettering on spine, glossy illustrated dust jacket, 144 pp. Color and BW illustrations. "Christopher Dresser was the first modern designer as well as a botanist, theorist and traveller. Dresser knew that mass production called for a new approach to design. Increasing wealth brought with it insatiable demands for novelty and variety. Dresser was able to meet these without transgressing the conventions of good taste. His best work is timeless - and not merely within the confines of the machine age. Dresser ran a large design office for over 40 years and kept pace with changes in taste". -Website Includes bibliographical references (pages 140-141) and index. Gutes Ex.; Umschlag stw. leicht berieben. - The influence of photography on art is a much debated subject. Less often considered is the equally interesting question of the influence of art on photography and the subtle interaction between the two. Graham Ovenden has discovered, selected and assembled photographs from the 1850s to 1870s which in style, mood and content faithfully reflect Pre-Raphaelite art. From Rossetti's superb series of photographs of William Morris's wife Jane we can see the inspiration behind the Brotherhood's ideal of feminine beauty. Julia Margaret Cameron's photographic illustrations for Tennyson's Idylls of the King share the intense poetic vision of the youthful Millais and Burne-Jones. The multiple imagery of Lewis Carroll's The Dream echoes the mystery of Arthur Hughes' The Tryst. There are many direct links between individual photographs and specific paintings and drawings but Ovenden, whilst drawing attention to these, has not sought to establish priorities. In his selection of what are amongst the most beautiful photographs ever pro-duced, he has shown how a shared imaginative and aesthetic ethos influences the representation of reality in any pictorial medium. The majority of the illustrations have been reproduced from Graham Ovenden's own vast collection of nineteenth century photographs. One of England's leading young artists, he does not share the ambivalent attitude towards photography still so prevalent. He is convinced that photography should be judged and appreciated on the same level and within the terms of reference usually reserved for the "fine arts".
