12mo., (5 6/8 x 3 6/8 inches). Illustrated throughout with diagrams, engravings of tennis rackets and balls, advertisements at end illustrating tennis poles, nets, shoes, court-markers, etc. Original blue printed paper wrappers (a few pale stains, corners chipped); preserved in a tan calf backed clamshell box. Provenance: with the ownership inscription of Harold Meeks dated 1888 on the front cover. Early edition, preceded by "Playing Rules of the Popular Games of Archery and Lawn Tennis" also published by Peck & Snyder in 1878, and with its current title in 1884. In this edition the rules for Equestrian Polo and Field Croquet are included at the very end. James Dwight and his second cousin Fred Sears played "what Dwight believed to be the first game of lawn tennis in America at his uncle William Appleton's property at Nahant, Massachusetts, in 1874 or 1875 (Dwight claimed one or the other year at different times, leaving the actual year open to debate). In 1876, 1877, and 1878, Dwight organized handicap round robin tournaments at Nahant. Playing with a scratch handicap, he won the first two tournaments. The 1877 event marked the first appearance of future champion Dick Sears, Fred's half brother. During September 1880 he and Dick Sears entered a "Championship of the United States" at Staten Island, New York, but they withdrew from the singles event after Dwight futilely protested that the balls were under regulation size and weight. Dwight and Sears then lost their second round doubles match. The ball controversy and a disagreement about the height of the net for doubles matches between players at tournaments in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and other cities prompted Clarence Clark from Philadelphia, Eugenius Outerbridge from New York City, and Dwight to convene a meeting in May 1881 that led to the creation of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association (USNLTA), forerunner of the U.S. Tennis Association. Illness kept Dwight out of the first U.S. singles championship at the Newport Casino in August 1881. Dick Sears won the singles, and he and Dwight lost in the second round of the doubles to Clark and Fred Taylor (who later became the "father of scientific management")" (Frank V. Phelps for ADNB). Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

Manuscript map in pen, ink, and coloured marker on waxed cloth measuring 1080 by 1650mm. Contemporary annotations, some creasing and wear along old folds, some minor spotting and toning, tack marks to corner, but very good. Signed and dated in the lower right corner: ?S. Owen Rees, A.D.F.O. (Emergency Stores and Statistics) 31-8-43.? [Wales] 31 August, This large map provides valuable insight into one of the under-reported crises of the home-front in World War Two. Britain was a net food importer and this lack of self-sufficiency was placed under enormous stress by Germany's submarine fleet which targeted both military and civilian shipping from as far away as Canada. Concerns over feeding a population of 50 million were such that in 1940 Whitehall revived the Ministry of Food Control (1916-21) - abbreviating it to Ministry of Food. - under the direction of businessman, Frederick James Marquis, 1st Earl of Woolton (1883-1964). Writing in the year that this map was produced, J.J. MacGregor gives an overview of the operations of the Ministry of Food: it ?is in touch with everyone, and its role of applying restrictions and controls is bound to be unpopular and made difficult from time to time. Naturally, the Ministry of Food was concerned with imported as well as home-grown food and it has among its functions the responsibility for food imports, the efficiency of distribution, rationing, and the interests of the consuming public? (MacGregor). Woolton proved more than capable overseeing a bureaucracy of over 50,000, the Ministry set up over 1,000 food distribution centres, and ensured that supplies were protected from enemy action (i.e. bombing) and spoilage, while seeing that the food was well distributed and always available in all parts of the country. His ?biggest triumph was getting people to accept rationing as not only necessary and patriotic but also equitable and efficient. He soon became, next to Churchill, the most popular and identifiable government minister. Woolton took the opportunity to implement positive social reform when he began the provision of milk to schoolchildren and orange juice to expectant mothers? (ODNB). The map was created by S. Owen Reese, the Assistant Divisional Food Officer for Edmund Hill-Snook (1888 -1976), the Ministry of Food?s Divisional Food Officer for South Wales. It would have been consulted frequently, if not daily, to plan for the storage, protection and distribution of precious food supplies across the region. At the time of its creation, the situation was still dire, but with the entry of United States into the war, no longer at its nadir. Devoted to South Wales, the map shows the entire southern half of the country. Its seven counties (which have since been revised) are all coloured in outline and grouped into six zones: Monmouthshire (Zone 1); Glamorgan (Zone 2, including Cardiff); Carmarthenshire (Zone 3); Pembrokeshire (Zone 4); Cadiganshire (Zone 5); Radnorshire and Brecknockshire (Zone 6, embracing the two counties). These are further divided into rural and urban zones - marked S.WA (South Wales), so ?Cardiff Urban S.WA 22?, or ?Neath Rural S.WA 67? - rural zones having low-density populations and were frequently net producers of food, while the opposite was true of Cardiff, Pembroke and Swansea. The numerous towns and villages that dot the countryside are actually marked to denote the locations of food storage and distribution centres. An extraordinary survival from the Welsh home front in the heart of the Second World War. MacGregor, J.J., ?Britain's Wartime Food Policy? in Journal of Farm Economics, Vol. 25, No. 2 (May, 1943) p.385.

The idea of each of these short plays is the conflict of man in the immediate prospect of death but all is fearlessness in each case, no illustration of the weak spirit in pain." "February 3rd, Arose early, walked about the city. Call at steamer office and drove 40+?.Lunch at hotel. Call on Coltelette's then go shopping for chain, umbrella, pipe for Charlty and Jean. 22; [42] pp. Illustrated with diagrams and wood engravings. 1 vols. 16mo. The Origins of Modern Tennis and the USLTA. A fascinating glimpse into the early days of a a sport just getting organized in the United States, The United States National Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1881 at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City, by a group of young players who wished to standardize the rules of the game and promote the sport (later, in 1920, "National" was dropped and the organization became simply the USLTA). The Rules they adopted eventually became a standard reference for aficionados of the fledgling sport. All early editions of the Rules of the game are quite rare, including this 1886 printing, and they can be divided into two groups of titles: those using "Official Rules" and those using "Playing Rules". According to Phelps & Sabine, editions of the THE OFFICIAL LAWN TENNIS RULES, AS ADOPTED etc., appeared in 1881 (Philadelphia, Lippincott) and 1882 (Boston, Wright & Dixon); but no copies of either of these editions is to be found in OCLC, which lists, however editions of 1885 and 1889 under that title. Also following Phelps & Sabine, THE PLAYING RULES AS ADOPTED, etc., was first published in New York in 1884 by Peck & Snyder. OCLC finds only one copy of that edition (Brown University); Phelps & Sabine also refer to editions of 1886 (this) and 1889 -- however, no copy of the 1886 edition is described. OCLC locates 3 copies: at St. Johns, Yale, and NY Public. The Racquet and Tennis CLub Library also holds a copy. The first section contains "The Laws of Lawn Tennis" and "The Constitution and By-Laws" of the fledgling Association, with a section on "Cases and Decisions" by James Wright; the second section contains the "Rules of Umpires", a discussion of various rackets and balls (Peck & Snyder, manufacturers), and illustrated ads for footwear, lawn markers, nets, tennis paraphernalia, etc. Finally, there is a list of over 40 Clubs belonging to the Association, including the "Cheynenne Lawn Tennis Club" in Wyoming, with 50 members. Copies of any of these USLTA incunabula are quite rare, and when found, quite fragile. Phelps & Sabine, p. 203; Racquet and Tennis Club, Dictionary Catalogue (1970) 2:414; OCLC (3 copies: Yale, St. Johns, and NY Public) Original beige printed wrappers. Small inkspot on upper cover, small chips from spine, otherwise an excellent copy of a rare, fragile, and important work 22; [42] pp. Illustrated with diagrams and wood engravings. 1 vols. 16mo.

Leaf with publisher's vignette recto, leaf with half-title recto and publication details verso, printed title and Kuzman's verse with section titles throughout, final three leaves with contents. Original publisher's printed wrappers with linocut Constructivist design in blue and red by Al'tman, spine repaired. The third edition of Kuzmin's acclaimed verse collection but the first with Al'tman's Constructivist cover. Mikhail Kuzmin studied music under Rimsky-Korsakov but turned later to literature. His first novel 'Kryl'ia' was published in 1906 and his first verse collection 'Seti' followed in 1908. 'Seti', written while Kuzmin was associated with the Russian Symbolists, achieved wide acclaim. Later Kuzmin was crucial in the development of Acmeism and helped the early career of Anna Akhmatova. A homosexual, Kuzmin was the companion of the poet Yuri Yurkun (they met in 1913), until his death from pneumonia in 1936. Two years later Yurkun and many other writers and intellectuals were arrested during one of Stalin's purges; all were shot. A second edition of 'Seti' was issued in 1915 and the verses were also included in Kuzmin's collected works of 1916 before this third distinct edition appeared in 1923. Praised, parodied or derided, 'Seti', now considered tame or chaste, is lauded as a pioneering work of literature.

An Act for removing all Doubts and Apprehensions concerning Taxation by the Parliament of Great Britain in any of the Colonies, Provinces and Plantations in North America and the West Indies; and for repealing so much of an Act, made in the Seventh Year of the Reign of His present Majesty, as imposes a Duty on Tea imported from Great Britain into any Colony or Plantation in America, or relates thereto. Also known as the SECOND CONCILIATORY ACT (1778). for sale by Bob Gaba

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Folio (12 inches). 18 George III, Chapter 12. General title leaf + pages 295-296. Woodcut Royal coat of arms, headband, and decorative initial. Text in Black Letter. Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. This Act, known as the Revenue Act Repeal, 1778 or Second Conciliatory Act, 1778, removed the tax on tea in the American colonies as a late peacemaking effort by the British government. The Act declared that parliament would no longer impose duties or taxes for the raising of revenue in the colonies, but would only impose duties as expedient to regulate commerce with the net income to be given to the colonies. Most significantly, the Act removed the duty on tea which had been imposed by the Townshend Revenue Act (7 George III, Chapter 46) in 1767. However, by the time this conciliatory law was passed, it was far too late: the colonies had already declared independence and the war was well under way.

  • 4to. 63 pp., final blank page. With 3 maps in the text. Original printed wrappers. Thorough paper on Saudi Arabia's non-oil-based economy, its regional diversity, cultural aspects, and challenges posed by the oil boom, packed with suggestions and solutions. Based on a 1962 lecture given at the University of Riyadh, featuring data up to 1961 and references up to 1962. - The paper briefly discusses the development of the oil industry and its benefits for health, education, transport and urbanisation, but notes that over-dependence on oil has weakened the rest of the economy. The main section addresses the non-oil sectors, explaining how equipment and irrigation are improving agriculture by increasing cultivable land, the chances of employment away from the oil sector, and living standards. While increased demand for imports has created a wealthy merchant class, it is undermining local industry (examples are given for dates, pasta, cement, and agricultural products). Based on numbers alone, Saudi Arabia should be a net exporter of livestock, but this is not the case. Fishing under-performs in spite of long coastlines and a wealth of marine life, reflected in poor performance by the Saudi Fishing Company due to primitive methods, lack of manpower and investment, preservation facilities, etc. The author analyses population and its engagement in different sectors, contrasting urban and rural areas and nomads. Closing sections draw out solutions, relating to modernisation, infrastructure, skills, and finance. With respect to the Bedouins, he calls for their settlement to increase the number of agricultural workers and productivity of herding, and describes what Bedouin settlements should look like. Maps show transport links, geology, and mineral wealth. - In excellent condition.

  • Seller image for Research into the Possibilities of Economic Development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - A lecture delivered during the Cultural Season of the Univsersity of Riyadh for sale by Dendera

Soft cover. Condition: Good. A wide ranging and detailed profile of Saudi Arabia's non-oil economy, its regional diversity, cultural aspects, challenges posed by the oil boom, with opportunities and solutions. The author was Professor of Geography at Kuwait University. Original b/w printed wraps 17x24cm. 63pp Arabic text including 3 maps. Wraps good with author's presentation ink stamp and a stain to the front. Interiors very good. Although dated 1965, the lecture was given in Jan 1962 with data up to 1961 and references up to 1962. This opens by explaining economic stagnation in the Peninsula as a result of challenging environment, semi-isolation, and religious aversion to change. Modernisation began with Ibn Saud and the oil concessions. There is brief discussion about the development of the oil industry and its benefits in health, education, transport and urbanisation. The author notes however, that over-dependence on oil has weakened the rest of the economy, awareness of which led to the creation of a planning council. The main part of this lecture addresses the non-oil sectors. He explains how equipment and irrigation are improving agriculture by increasing cultivable land, employment away from the oil sector, and living standards. However, while resulting increased demand for imports has created a wealthy merchant class, it is undermining local industry (examples are given for dates, pasta, cement, and agricultural products). Saudi should be a net exporter of livestock but this is not the case. Fishing under-performs in spite of long coastlines and a wealth of marine life, reflected in poor performance by the Saudi Fishing Company due to primitive methods, lack of people and investment, preservation facilities, etc. Mining has slumped. Small industry has grown, highlighting those activities that benefit during Hajj, but is limited by historical and cultural factors including lack of skills, unstable labour force (generations of farmers and shepherds are reluctant to work in factories for long), and merchants who traditionally want quick and sure profits are reluctant to invest long-term. The author analyses population and its engagement in different sectors, contrasting urban and rural areas and nomads. Closing sections draw out solutions, relating to modernisation, infrastructure, skills, finance etc. With respect to the Bedouin, he calls for their settlement to increase the number of agricultural workers and productivity of herding, and describes what Bedouin settlements would look like. Farmers need technical and financial support, protection from exploitation by merchants, more efficient use of water, etc. Better data on population and activity is a priority for planning. Maps show transport links, geology, and mineral wealth.

Brussels: Devaivre, n.d. (circa 1925). Oblong octavo (22 x 28 cm). Original textured and printed publisher's wrappers, with silk rope tie; 4 pp. of preface text in French and English followed by 29 black-and-white reproductions from photographs by Misonne plus pictorial title page. Some light scattered handling wear, dust-staining, and toning, some soiling and minor chipping to wrappers, overall about very good. Léonard Misonne (1870-1943) was an important Belgian pictorialist photographer best known for his atmospheric landscapes and street scenes, and was nicknamed the "Corot of photography". According to the Directory of Belgian Photographers, "Misonne's work is characterised by a masterly treatment of light and atmospheric conditions. His images express poetic qualities, but sometimes slip into an anecdotal sentimentality." He experimented with many different lighting techniques and processes to achieve his intented results, such as the Fresson processes, bromoil or oil printing, and his own version of bromoil called the mediobrome processes. He also invented two different printing processes. With the "photo-dessin" process, a photograph is turned into a line drawing by projecting the negative onto a drawing surface and darkening the light areas with a pencil until they disappear, a sort of manual form of negative printing. The "Flou-Net" process uses ruffled celluloid strips to help soften the image. Misonne was also a member of the Societé Française de Photographie as well as a founding member of the Cercle d'Art Photographique, and exhibited his work throughout the United States and Europe. This slim volume collects reproductions of a total of 30 of Misonne's atmospheric landscapes, each titled below the image in French, German, English, and Dutch. The preface, written by Ch. Duvivier, states, "If he shows a preference for landscapes, he has such variety of them and can show them under such different lights: dawn, twilight, wind, rain, mist, mud, dust and even snowstorms. He has an innumerable variety of skies crowning his pictures from the untangable light of dawn to the monstrous nimbus clouds out of which lightning seems ready to spring forth. Where his works, however, all resemble each other, is in the fact that they all represent a phase of the atmosphere and one always feels in what kind of weather he has worked." As of March 2023, OCLC locates only a single holding of this work in a North American institution.

  • Couverture souple. Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. - - - - - - - In-8 ° paperback under cover of paper dominated the time, 2 pages. This text reports the decree of the last day of the third and last term of office of Pusy where it is concluded that "France does not forget what she owes to your examples, what she owes to this wise Pensilvanie within from which the legislators of America dared to announce to the world the true principles of the social art May the inhabitants of this glorious and wealthy country recognize in the Decree of the National Assembly the sentiments which animate the first friends of Independence American! " It is one of the thirteen founding states of the United States. King Charles II of England had taken a large loan from William Penn's father. As reimbursement. 1, he granted William Penn a large area in southwestern New Jersey on March 4, 1682, containing both Pennsylvania and the current Delaware. Penn called the Sylvania region (forest in Latin), which Charles changed to Pennsylvania. The colony hosts German sects and Irish and Welsh Baptists. The climate of religious tolerance encourages the economy. After the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) in the German Empire, 125,000 German Lutherans settled in Pennsylvania. Around 1720-30, bread is already three times cheaper than in Massachusetts, especially in Boston. Around 1750, the population of Philadelphia exceeded that of Boston.

pp. (34) + single fold-out. Polish-born artist Ewa Partum is considered a pioneer of Eastern European feminist art produced within the conceptual idiom. Partum founded the Galeria Adres in the spring of 1972 in _d_, where she moved from Warsaw in 1971, and initially located her gallery in a small space under the steps of the offices of the Association of Polish Artists (Zwi_zek Polskich Artystw Plastykw, or ZPAP). In her gallery, Partum emphasised the importance of art theory to her practice, with the aim of the gallery to maintain contact with leading art theoreticians such as Andrzej Kosto_owski in Poland, Lszl Beke in Hungary, and Klaus Groh in West Germany. In 1972, using ZPAP facilities without requesting permission from the organisation, Partum self-published ÒTheses on Art No 1Ð17Ó, a seminal text on conceptual art by Andrezj Kosto_owski, which remains one of the most important historical texts on conceptual art written in Polish. In the 1970s Kosto_owski was actively involved in the activities of the conceptual movement. He participated in numerous exhibitions, initially as a theoretician, later as an artist. As part of the NET - formulated in 1971 together with the artist Jaros_aw Koz_owski - he attempted to create an independent, international network of artists, the existence of which would allow for a direct exchange of artistic ideas. In this booklet, each of Kosto_owskiÕs seventeen short theses, a few of which take the form of diagrams, are also translated into English. Original black wrappers, titles printed in white to front cover.

REA'S BREEDING HOBBLES"; DR. REA'S "STALLION SERVICE BOOK" ON THE CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF STALLIONS AND JACKS; AND MORE for sale by David M. Lesser, ABAA

10-1/2" x 16" broadsheet, folded accordion style to 4" x 10-1/2". [8] panels, illustrations. Five panels with books and products offered by Dr. Rea; two panels with printed letter from Dr. Rea with a New York address, an order form, and facsimile signature; one panel with testimonial letters from F.G. Dennis of the Bank of Wellston of Oklahoma; and H.P. Brown of Oakland Farm of North Carolina. Several panels have additional testimonials from customers in Missouri, Nebraska, Mississippi, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Illinois, Canadian Indian Territories. Old folds, light toning, occasional short fold splits [no loss, repaired with archival tape]. Very Good. This is certainly an unusual trade brochure, especially for a city fellow like myself. Dr. Rea's contraption, illustrated here, promises to cure the stallion's "vicious habit of self-abuse. Its effects are far-reaching and of such a serious nature that many a good stallion and jack has been ruined by it." Dr. Charles L. Rea advertised himself as a veterinarian, attorney, and businessman, with offices in New York and Kansas City, Missouri. He was best known for his work with horses, and for his products produced at the Dr. Charles L. Rea's Serum Company, in Kansas City. His horse product advertisements appeared frequently in the American Journal of Veterinary Medicine, The Horse Review, and The Country Gentleman. In this brochure he states in the printed letter that his "Breeding Outfit" is "the greatest money-maker ever invented" which will "more than double the income of any stallion or jack". The order blank is provided for those who want to order the set of an Impregnator, Thermometer, Speculum and 1904 Breeders' Bag for $15. His Stallion and Jack Alarm Shield contains an illustration of the product and claims that it works "by means of an elastic surcingle, a shield with a metal net is fixed under the penis in such a manner that when the penis is extended it presses against an alarm bell that rings continuously until the stallion or jack desists." Illustrations are also included of the safety bit and breeding hobbles.
