Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Iceberg Slim's first three novels (Pimp, Trick Baby and Mama Black Widow) offered some of the rawest and bleakest visions of urban America ever put to paper. Their refusal to compromise, coupled with their reflection of society's underworld and underbelly, rapidly won him a major following. The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim, however, proves to be something of a departure in the sense that it is a series of short personal recollections. Make no mistake, the passion, razor-sharp perception and unflinching honesty remains and, if anything, is all the more chilling for its total directness. The wisdom he gained from a life of serious excess and violence is to be found within this varied collection of soul-bearing confessions that reveal why Iceberg Slim has been revered so widely as the spokesman of the street. This edition includes an introduction by Iceberg Slim's widow, Diane Millman Beck. 'Slim always told it as it was, without compromise' - Irvine Walsh Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

First Printing. Small octavo. (18 cm.) 320 pp. Paperback original. Photo-illustrated titles in black on front and spine, with photo-image of author on verso. Book neat, tight and unmarked. Overall Very Good. "Adult Reading" Alias, Robert Beck. Alias Robert Maupin. Pimp, hustler, writer. Street and pen name, Iceberg Slim. Writing grim, noirish tales about Black street life when he wasn't hustling or pimping women, Iceberg Slim has become a legend of the lowdown since his death in 1992. When he was too old to pimp, according to Beck himself, and encouraged by his wife, Beck committed himself to writing books about his experiences in the criminal underworld. Money could be made if you lived without your soul, the poor were forsaken and the exotic and beautiful were to be exploited. Like fellow shameless author, James Joyce, Iceberg Slim writes of truth and language and outrage -- in search of the human condition. In "Mama Black Widow", a young, Black, Gay man must come to terms with a vicious, uncaring world and learn to live a dangerous but more truthful life in the shadows and on the streets. Recognized for his lurid style and his unglamorized portraits of fellow pimps, prostitutes, thieves, racist psychotic cops and fringe dwellers, the best-selling books of Iceberg Slim ushered in the era of "Black Exploitation" influencing 1960s cinema and eventually Hip Hop culture. The movie rights to "Mama Black Widow" have been acquired but don't take the kids -- it will most likely have an "R" rating.

[African American] [LGBTQ] Beck, Robert (Aka Iceberg Slim) Mama Black Widow and The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim. Los Angeles: Holloway House Publishing Co., 1969 and 1971. First Edition Paperbacks. Both are about 300 pages. Both measures 4.25" x 7". Iceberg Slim was an American former pimp who later became a writer. In 1961, after serving 10 months of solitary confinement in a Cook County jail, Maupin decided he was too old for a life of pimping at the age of 42 and moved to Los Angeles to become a writer. Beck wrote several more novels, an autobiography, and a story collection. He sold over six million books before his death in 1992, making him one of the best-selling African-American writers. Scottish author Irvine Welsh said: "Iceberg Slim did for the pimp what Jean Genet did for the homosexual and thief and William Burroughs did for the junkie: he articulated the thoughts and feelings of someone who had been there." This archive includes: [1] Mama Black Widow, which tells the tragic story of Otis Tilson, a stunning black drag queen trapped in a cruel queer ghetto underworld. In hopes of escaping the racial bigotry and economic injustice of the South, Otis' family journeys north from their plantation to an urban promised land. Once in Chicago, Otis and his brother and sisters become prisoners to a wasteland of violence, crime, prostitution and rape. This is the gut-wrenching tale of the destruction of a family and the truest portrayal of homosexuality in the ghetto ever told. The pages are yellowed due to age, overall in very good condition. [2] The Naked Soul of Iceberg Slim. Iceberg Slim's collection of personal essays that focus on his hope for the future, reflections on his life as a pimp, dope addict, and other experiences in the ghetto. From the introduction: "I want to say at the outset that I have become ill, insane, as an inmate of the torture chamber behind America's fake facade of justice and democracy. But I am not as ill as I was, and I am getting better all the time." Both books have minor wear from age and on spine , but overall, both books are in very good condition. Rare collection of novels that deal with African American life in the ghetto, trans representation, and the LGBTQ experience of Black Americans.
