Lo que no era más que un diagnóstico de unos problemas concretos, en una época y un lugar determinados, se utilizó para difundir una visión errónea de las causas de la ruina del imperio, que no eran la cruel opresión y extorsiones de corregidores y curas, sino otras de mayor complejidad. Tomando en cuenta las intenciones con que fueron escritas, las Noticias secretas se nos aparecen hoy como un documento interno de crítica de los males del colonialismo de una sinceridad y una lucidez que no encontraríamos en ninguna otra tradición imperial.
