Bakterien wurden erstmals von Antoni van Leeuwenhoek mit Hilfe eines selbstgebauten Mikroskops in Gewässern und im menschlichen Speichel beobachtet und 1676 von ihm in Berichten an die Royal Society of London beschrieben. Lebensweise und Stoffwechsel der Bakterien sind sehr unterschiedlich ausgeprägt. So gibt es Bakterien, die Sauerstoff benötigen (aerobe Bakterien oder Aerobier), Bakterien, für die Sauerstoff Gift ist (obligat anaerobe Bakterien oder obligate Anaerobier), und Bakterien, die tolerant gegenüber Sauerstoff sind (fakultative Anaerobier). Einige Bakterien sind zur Photosynthese fähig, also phototroph, zum Beispiel die (früher auch Blaualgen genannten) Cyanobakterien, die meisten sind dagegen chemotroph. Von den Chemotrophen sind die meisten heterotroph, einige jedoch chemoautotroph, und zwar lithoautotroph. Manche Bakterien (z. B. Bacillus) bilden Dauerstadien (Sporen) aus, in denen der komplette Stoffwechsel zum Erliegen kommt. In diesem Zustand können die Bakterien für sie ungünstige - auch extreme - Umweltbedingungen überstehen und mehrere tausend Jahre überdauern.
