Ein Nachweis von Salzsiedersiedlungen wird archäologisch meist nur über die Briquetagen, eine spezielle technische Keramik, geführt. Die Bedeutung dieser Funde für die Salzgewinnung in vor- und frühgeschichtlicher Zeit wird seit dem 18. Jahrhundert kontrovers diskutiert. Das Buch liefert eine bisher fehlende systematische Bestandsaufnahme aller aus der Literatur und den Archiven erfassten vor- und frühgeschichtlichen Fundstellen und - im speziellen - die Vorlage aller am Fundmaterial untersuchten Briquetagen des Mansfelder Seengebietes. Die geografische Lage dieses speziellen Naturraums inmitten des mitteldeutschen Trockengebietes und des vom Zechsteinsalinar durchzogenen Raumes bot ein hervorragendes Beispiel, den umweltbedingten Besiedlungsablauf mit den materiellen Unterschieden zu verdeutlichen. Mit numerisch-systematischer Datenerfassung und mathematisch-statistischen Methoden konnten die Briquetagen als zeitlich, räumlich und kulturell nicht gleichartiges Quellenmaterial bestimmt werden. Die Autorin belegt anschaulich, dass zwischen der vor- und frühgeschichtlichen Besiedlung und den Umweltbedingungen eine nachweisbare Korrelation bestanden haben muss. Die Siedlungen lassen sich in AusmaÃ, Dichte und Hà henlage voneinander unterscheiden. Art, Umfang, Verbreitung und Verteilung der daraus hervorgegangenen Fundgegenstände, insbesondere der Briquetagen wurden von den klimatischen sowie besonderen halotektonischen und hydrogeologischen Bedingungen und dem anthropogenen Einfluss mitbestimmt. Ein umfangreicher Katalog- und Tafelteil mit zahlreichen Graphiken und Tabellen sowie Karten geben eine umfassende Ãbersicht über das Fundmaterial. Von den 264 Fundstellen führen 32 Funde und Befunde mit insgesamt 4112 Briquetagen.
