Malerei, Plastik, Architektur, Theater, Ballett, Oper und genauso Wirtschaft, Handel, Bankwesen und Wissenschaft folgten dem "Modell Italien", das sich zunächst in den reichsten Stadtstaaten voll entfalten konnte und dann auf ganz Europa übergriff. Kaufleute und Bankiers waren es, die den Weg bereiteten, auf dem erst die Handwerker, später die Künstler folgten. Von der Frührenaissance bis zum Beginn des Rokkoko blieb Italiens Strahlkraft ungebrochen, und selbst in Zeiten wirtschaftlichen Niedergangs gingen von hier immer wieder neue Impulse aus, wurden hier die Maßstäbe für kulturelles und geistiges Schaffen gesetzt. Der Name Braudel bürgt für einen eleganten, aber wissenschaftlich fundierten Text, der allein schon eine außergewöhnliche Leistung darstellt - Autor: Fernand Braudel (1902 - 1985) wird weltweit als einer der großen Historiker unseres Jahrhunderts angesehen. Seit er die Herausgeberschaft der epochemachenden Zeitschrift "Annales" übernahm (1946), galt er als führender Kopf der "Nouvelle Histoire". Er habilitierte sich 1946 mit seiner bahnbrechenden Studie über den Mittelmeerraum zur Zeit Philipps II. 1949 wurde er auf den Lehrstuhl für Zivilisationsgeschichte am Collège de France berufen, wo er 20 Jahre lehrte. Er war Präsident der 6. Sektion der Ecole des Hautes Etudes, zwanzigfacher Ehrendoktor, Mitglied von zwölf Akademien (darunter die Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften), Träger fünf hoher Orden. 1962 gründete er das "Maison des sciences de l'homme" in Paris. Am 30. Mai 1985 wurde er in die Académie Française aufgenommen. Im November 1985 verstarb Fernand Braudel im Alter von 83 Jahren. In deutscher Sprache. 240 pages. 18,6 x 12 x 2 cm.
