Treibende Kraft war der Basler Physikprofessor und Politiker Eduard Hagenbach-Bischoff (1833-1910), der sich von der Konzeption über die Mittelbeschaffung bis hin zur Festlegung des Raumprogramms und zur technischen Ausstattung um alles kümmerte. Mit Johann Jacob Stehlin d.J. (1826-1894) fand er einen Architekten, dem es gelang, ein Institutsgebäude zu entwerfen, das seinen Zweck, aber auch das Bedürfnis nach öffentlicher Repräsentation erfüllte. Seit seiner feierlichen Eröffnung im Juni 1874 hat das Bernoullianum manche Umgestaltung und Umnutzung erlebt. Zurzeit beherbergt es die Umweltgeowissenschaften, das Imaging and Media Lab sowie die verbliebenen Institutionen der Erdwissenschaften (Geologie-Paläontologie und Mineralogie-Petrographie), deren Schliessung für 2016 geplant ist. Erneut stehen also Änderungen bevor - ein guter Zeitpunkt, der Geschichte dieses besonderen Gebäudes nachzugehen. Der Historiker Christian Simon zeigt in diesem Buch auf, wie es zur «Anstalt für Physik, Chemie und Astronomie an der Universität Basel» kam und wie sich diese Institute in den ersten Jahrzehnten des Bernoullianums entwickelten. Wie Johann Jacob Stehlin die anspruchsvolle Bauaufgabe löste, stellt die Architekturhistorikerin Dorothee Huber dar. Mit Willem B. Stern kommt ein Bernoullianum-Nutzer zu Wort: Sein Überblick über die Geochemie in Basel vermittelt Einblicke in die wissenschaftliche Arbeit und den Forscheralltag im Bernoullianum. Wie sich das Bernoullianum heute präsentiert, zeigen die eigens für dieses Buch geschaffenen Photographien von Børje Müller.
