Il se souvient de son apprentissage auprès de son maître, des échelons gravis grâce à son talent exceptionnel jusqu'à approcher les plus hautes autorités religieuses, et participer à la recherche du nouveau tulkou, l'enfant appelé à succéder au défunt Dalaï-lama. Cette quête s'est fondée sur une vision qu'a eue, en présence de Bstan Pa, le Régent responsable de la recherche de l'enfant élu. En transes, il voyait une maison au toit bleu, un arbre auquel un cheval était attaché, un paysage très détaillé. Bstan Pa, au fur et à mesure, a peint sur une toile les éléments de la vision. Munis de ce document précieux, les deux hommes sont partis à travers montagnes et vallées pour retrouver la maison de l'enfant destiné à devenir le quatorzième Dalaï-lama.
