Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good/Very Good. First Edition. A tight clean first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wrapper, n ot price clipped/ex library or a book of the month edition. When she was young, Leila Hadley's grandmother told her that James Boswell, her great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, "may have been naughty, indiscreet, and intemperate, but he was an excellent journalist." Born to be a traveler and writer, Hadley has spent her life exploring India and Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and writing about it with luminous intelligence, unsparing insight, and earthy wit. This is an account of Hadley's tour across India with her estranged daughter. She evokes the smells, fruits, and colors of India, all the while trying to work out a new relationship with Veronica. Hers is one of the few voices that can do justice to India, with its inundation of the senses, history, art, bazaars, and humanity. Add to that the gentle inclusion of stories--her childhood, failed marriages, mothering traumas--and you've got a stirring travelogue and a powerfully beautiful memoir.

Book First Edition
Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. A beautiful copy of this increasingly scarce and collectible book; a most attractive book that is very nice, tight and clean copy. 600 pages. Elsa Cloud is a pet name for travel writer Hadley's daughter, Veronica. In this opulent work, more a quest than a travel memoir, Hadley joins her estranged daughter on a trek through 1970s India to Tibet, a journey that will culminate in an encounter with the Dalai Lama. Along the way they will shop, visit museums, witness Hindu and Buddhist rituals, and meet hippies and holy men. Hadley examines the scars left from her relationship with her own proper and controlling mother as she attempts to understand the causes of the emotional gulf separating herself and her Buddhist scholar daughter. Eventually, a reconciliation of sorts is achieved. For some readers, the continuous analysis of every gesture, word, and visual image may be disconcerting; still, Hadley's descriptive detail is rendered in such lyrical prose and the personal reflections in such an affective manner that even the most jaundiced reader will be swept up. Highly recommended.
