Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. TEXAS MERCHANT; MARVIN LEONARD & FORT WORTH (Number Eighteen: Kenneth E. Montague Series in Oil and Business History), Victoria Beunger and Walter Beunger, signed by the two authors on the half-title page, softcover, stated second printing, illustrated with photos, 2008 [originally published in 1998]. BOOK CONDITION: fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The illustrated wraps are in near fine condition (a few faint scratches). 9 x 6, 246 pages, 15 ounces XX The twentieth-century downtown of Fort Worth, Texas, grew up around one particular retail department store, Leonards. Rural Texans and local blue-collar families looked to Leonards as a kind of consumer mecca from the 1920s, one of the most dynamic eras, until the decline in rural population and the creation of rival suburban shopping areas eventually undermined its appeal. Customers found there a stunning array of goods?fur coats and canned tuna, pianos and tractors?and an environment that combined the spectacular and the familiar. For almost fifty years, as the store grew to sprawl over six and a half downtown blocks, Marvin Leonard, his brother Obie, and a staff of outstanding managers and employees sold high-quality merchandise "at a price people wanted to pay." But the story of Leonards is more than a story of one business, or even of the retail industry. Marvin Leonard always looked at downtown Fort Worth as a total package, recognizing that business there was better if the other downtown merchants also thrived. To attract people downtown, Leonards maintained a unique, almost carnival, atmosphere, even having its own free subway that anyone could use. Leonards gave Fort Worth a special identity, a distinctiveness, and an attraction to the city's center: When the store was sold to Tandy, and later to Dillard's, Fort Worth's image and character changed dramatically. This engaging story of a man, a business, and the community the store mirrored and, indeed, helped to form represents local history and biography at their finest. VICTORIA A BUENGER, a visiting professor of management at Texas A&M University, studies strategy and competitive dynamics in retailing. WALTER L. BUENGER'S most recent book, The Path to a Modern South: Northeast Texas Between Reconstruction and the Great Depression won the Coral H. Tullis Award for the best book on Texas published in 2001. He is head of the history department at Texas A&M University. Signed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Few department stores symbolized the aspirations of a community or represented the identity of its citizens in a stronger or more enduring way than Leonards in Fort Worth, Texas. For over fifty years, as the store grew from a cubbyhole across from the Tarrant County courthouse into a retailing behemoth sprawling over six and a half downtown blocks, Marvin Leonard, the store's founder, and his brother Obie ran a store that was always a unique place to shop. The brothers used a combination of large volume, low mark-up, and quick turnover to keep prices low and appeal to the common people of Fort Worth and West Texas. Customers also found a stunning array of goods -- fur coats and canned tuna, pianos and tractors -- and an environment that combined the spectacular with the familiar.
