Printed wrappers, 8vo, 174 pp. The papers presented to this conference were: Sheila Lambert: The Printers and the Government, 1604-1640; Derek Nuttall; English Printers and their Typefaces, 1600-1700; Peter Isaac: Bulmer's Influential Supporters: An Enquiry Still in Progress; Michael Perkin: William Eyres and the Warrington Press; Michael Henry: The Nineteenth-Century Printing; Apprenticeship: Elements of Change; Ian Maxted: Bertuch: Weimar's Literary Midwife; Michael Treadwell: Lists of Master Printers: The Size of the London Printing Trade, 1637-1723. From the blurb: "Sheila Lambert and Michael Treadwell tackle problems of establishing exactly who, and how many, were actively printing in London in the years preceding the lapse of the 1695 Licensing Act, and the reasons why their numbers were deliberately restricted. Michael Harvey considers the training of apprentices, complementing' the discussion of the plight of journeymen in the seventeenth century which forms part of Sheila Lambert's paper. Individual printing and publishing houses are the subject of recent research by Peter Isaac, Michael Perkin and Ian Maxted. Peter Isaac, already known for his work on Bulmer, now continues his studies, showing that Bulmer derived many clients from his brother's royal connections. This account contrasts with Michael Perkin's narrative of the prosperous eighteenth-century Warrington firm run by the Eyres family. His record of a successful provincial firm is complemented by Ian Maxted's survey of the astonishing success-story of Bertuch's Weimar operation - from which some illuminating parallels may be drawn. Derek Nuttall illustrates the considerable difficulties encountered in seeking to identify individual seventeenth-century printers by analysing the typefaces they used." Wrappers slightly marked, otherwise Very Good.
