B&W Photographs; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some beginning rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly crisp and clean, with the exception of some beginning bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners, along with a very small chip to the top rear panel. "In 1908, Hine became the photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) , leaving his teaching position. Over the next decade, Hine documented child labor, with focus on the use of child labor in the Carolina Piedmont, [3] to aid the NCLC's lobbying efforts to end the practice. In 1913, he documented child laborers among cotton mill workers with a series of Francis Galton's composite portraits. Hine's work for the NCLC was often dangerous. As a photographer, he was frequently threatened with violence or even death by factory police and foremen. At the time, the immorality of child labor was meant to be hidden from the public. Photography was not only prohibited but also posed a serious threat to the industry. To gain entry to the mills, mines and factories, Hine was forced to assume many guises. At times he was a fire inspector, postcard vendor, bible salesman, or even an industrial photographer making a record of factory machinery. " (from Wikipedia).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Aperture; New York, New York, 1977, assumed first edition. 11-5/8" x 9-3/4", 142 numbered pages. A very attractive fine quality book with numerous images--virtually every page from 26 to 116 has a single image; all are black-and-white and each has a brief 3-10 word description of what the image shows plus location and year; many are of child laborers and tenement situations. There are many powerful and, even now, disturbing photos of American society. They are followed by a 19-page essay analyzing Hine's impact on America. The book is bound in one-piece black paper-covered boards and is free of edge dings and corner bumps; head and heel of spine are also not bumped, with all edges virtually free of wear; both boards are clean as is the spine. There is no fading. Except for original owner's name/date inked on the top of the reverse side of the FFEP, the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage of any type. The corner-clipped jacket is of NF quality--it has no tears, chips or fading; all it has is extremely light general shelf wear. What it also has is masking tape on the reverse side, along both top and bottom edges, at the spine and both front and rear folds. The tape has caused slight discoloration to the end pages but not to the binding and only slight darkening of the jacket's edges, most noticeable on the rear panel of the jacket.

A compassionate realist in the tradition of Stephen Crane and Theodore Dreiser, Lewis Hine had the rare gift of being able to transcend the assignments he received as a documentary photographer by investing the most topical subject with lasting human quality. Certain photographs seem the epitome of a time and a place: true facts as much as they are works of art. Think of Mathew Brady's Civil War, Eugene Atget's Paris, Walker Evans' 1930's: images so evocative of the spirit as well as the physical look of their subjects that they have become our very conception of that place at that time. Lewis Hine belongs among these true masters of the camera's power. His pictures make a history for us. They are also enthralling personal realities. Inglese.
