Book
Hardcover. Condition: good. 412 pages. Illustrations. Footnotes. Bibliography. Notes. Index. Boards somewhat worn and soiled. Pencil erasure and ink marks on front endpaper. Gene Smith depicted the lives of presidents, prime ministers and generals in a series of biographies, among them the 1964 best seller "When the Cheering Stopped: The Last Years of Woodrow Wilson." The book was on The Times's best-seller list for 15 weeks. Of Mr. Smith's 19 books, perhaps the next best-known is "The Shattered Dream: Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression" (1970). He portrayed Hoover as an honest, caring president trapped by circumstances beyond his powers, and also by his own reserve and cautiousness. At the same time, Hoover "took no precipitate steps," Mr. Smith wrote, "saying that the most dangerous thing in the world was a man with emotion but no ideas." Among Mr. Smith's other books are "High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Impeachment and Trial of Andrew Johnson" (1977); "Lee and Grant: A Dual Biography" (1984); and "Until the Last Trumpet Sounds: The Life of General of the Armies John J. Pershing" (1998), a study of the commander of the American Expeditionary Force of World War I. His last book, "Mounted Warriors: From Alexander the Great and Cromwell to Stuart, Sheridan and Custer" (2009), is a history of the cavalry. Written with depth and feeling, this book skillfully interweaves the lives of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Here are the two charismatic figures in their early years, in their roles as adversaries, and in their post-war lives. Derived from a Kirkus review: The contrast between the Civil War's two great battle captains--in origin, personality, antebellum career, military outlook--is an enduring theme of American history and a natural for biography. The book makes emblematic use of a tale that is perhaps apocryphal: that young Captain Grant was rebuked for unkemptness during the Mexican War by "immaculately turned out" Colonel Lee--presaging the contrast in their appearance at Appomattox, where Grant allegedly reminded Lee of the incident. The book has strengths. Smith gives a sympathetic accounting of West Pointer Grant's humiliating descent' to Galena clerkship and of his post-presidential flounderings, redeemed by the race-against-death to complete, his memoirs (and provide for his family). He also frames Lee between his straitened, disgrace-shadowed youth and his sunny postbellum presidency of little Washington College. Smith's review of the Grant presidency is standard.
