Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 260 pages. What is a weed? Definitions abound, some more clev er than true. For the author, weeds are plants that grow uninvite d in places disturbed by people or their animals. But although we eds may invade our fields and gardens, most are not aggressive aw ay from disturbed areas. Some have notable virtues, whether medic inal, culinary, or even ornamental. Not intended to be a manual o f weed identification --- although the descriptions, drawings, an d photographs will help readers name many of their newfound frien ds --- or weed eradication, this book is for anyone interested in weeds as plants. A veritable natural history of weeds, it will e ncourage readers to look anew at these previously unwelcome guest s. Editorial Reviews From Booklist Weed warfare seems to occupy most of a gardener's time, yet these unrivaled adaptative champi ons of the plant world need not be the bane of one's existence. S ome, like Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St. John's Wort , are popularly believed to have medicinal applications, while ot hers, like Toxicodendron radicans (poison ivy), require medical a ttention instead. For good or ill, learning to appreciate these u biquitous plants, if not in our gardens then at least in more app ropriate habitats, is the premise of Heiser's work and the guidin g force behind his lengthy career as a botanist. Profiling 140 we eds, Heiser first classifies them by botanic family, then briefly discusses their nomenclature before offering a concise, nontechn ical description of their growth habits and background. Like the retired professor he is, Heiser's is a scholarly approach, at onc e erudite and entertaining. Although it is not meant to serve as a tool for weed identification, Heiser's guide helps us appreciat e those commonplace plants we look at daily without ever really s eeing. Carol Haggas Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Review For anyone interested in weeds as plants . -- The Bookseller, January 2003 Book Description What is a wee d? Definitions abound, some more clever than true. For the author , weeds are plants that grow uninvited in places disturbed by peo ple or their animals. But although weeds may invade our fields an d gardens, most are not aggressive away from disturbed areas. Som e have notable virtues, whether medicinal, culinary, or even orna mental. This book is for anyone interested in weeds as plants. F rom the Author Charles B. Heiser is Distinguished Professor Emeri tus of Botany at Indiana University, Bloomington. About the Auth or Charles B. Heiser is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Botan y at Indiana University, Bloomington. Since 1947 he has observed the weeds in his garden, the Botany Experimental Field at the uni versity, about which he feels rather possessive because he has gr own plants there longer than anyone. His studies of sunflowers le d to his interest in natural hybridization, domesticated plants, and weeds. He has served as president of the Botanical Society of America, Society for the Study of Evolution, Society for Economi c Botany, and American Society of Plant Taxonomists, and he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is also the author of Nightshades, The Sunflower, The Gourd Book, Of Plants and Peo ple, and Seed to Civilization.
