Book First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st. 364 pages, illustrations; 30 cm. Published on the occasion of the exhibition held May 17 to August 19, 1984. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. Controversial MoMA survey introducing many visitors to Neo-Expressionism from Germany (Baselitz, Dahn, Dokoupil, Fetting, Hodicke, Immendorff, Kiefer, Lupertz, Middendorf, Penck, Polke), Italy (Chia, Clemente, Cucchi, Paladino), and the United States (Basquiat, Borofsky, Fischl, Schnabel). It was criticized in radical quarters for marginalizing Minimalism, Conceptual art, performance, video, and other avant-garde forms; women artists picketed the museum because of their low representation. Mostly, though, it is remembered as a watershed event in the art scene of the Reagan Years, when Neo-Expressionism was given the imprimatur of the Museum of Modern Art, an institution that had never been friendly to Expressionism, German or otherwise, under the leadership of Alfred Barr. Size: 4to. Collectible.

Book First Edition
Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 10.5 inches by 11.5 inches. 364, [4] pages. Illustrations. Illustrated front and back covers. Cover has some wear and soiling. Rear corner creased. This is an oversized book that if sent outside of the United States will require additional shipping charges. This work was published on the occasion of the exhibition An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture, May 17 - August 19, 1984 The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The exhibition presented notable recent work in contemporary art. Of 165 artists in the show, only 13 were women, spurring a group of women artists of the time to form Guerrilla Girls, who continue their activist performance and multi-media work today. The contents are Artists, Preface, Introduction, The Survey, Documentation [Individual Artists, Group Exhibitions], Acknowledgments, Lenders to the Exhibition, Trustees of The Museum of Modern Art, and Photograph Credits. Kynaston Leigh Gerard McShine (February 20, 1935 - January 8, 2018) was a Trinidadian born curator and public speaker. His visions about contemporary art made lasting contributions to the lives of countless artists and colleagues at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City where he worked from 1959 to 2008. He is said to be the first curator of color at a major American museum and at his retirement he had risen to the position of chief curator at large of painting and sculpture. This is a lovingly edited exhibition catalog of an historical survey held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in the fall of 1984, showing many interesting artist's with artworks from the early 1980's. MoMA's Kynaston L. McShine curated the exhibition. Thanks to careful editorial work by Harriet Schoenholz Bee and Jane Fluegel, this publication, handsomely designed by Stephen Doyle and Thomas Kluepfel, is a reliable art historical and a unique archival document where each exhibited artist is given their deserved recognition with a brief biography along with photographs of the exhibited artworks.
