Hardcover original Dark Red li. Condition: Fine. #### The Observer Book of Postage Stamps - 1977 - No.42 #### # With 16 plates in full colour and 502 black and white illustrations. # ~#~ The Observer's Books were a series of small, pocket-sized books, published by Frederick Warne & Co in the United Kingdom from 1937 to 2003. They covered a variety of topics, including hobbies, art, history and wildlife. These books aimed to interest the observers, and they have also been popular amongst children. Some of them have become collector's items. For the dedicated collector, this could be a lifetime's work as there are over 800 variations, some of which are now rare. The values of the books can vary from 50 pence to hundreds of pounds. Until 1969, books printed had dust covers. Each one had a unique pattern of squiggly lines at the top, but these were not very especially practical because they were easy to rip and stain. From 1970, the covers received a glossy coating. Books of this type are generally called "Glossies". From the late 1970s, Warne decided to laminate the books cover to the actual books to make them sturdier and more resistant to wear. The first Observer's guide was published in 1937 and was on the subject of British birds. A mint copy with a dust cover is worth hundreds of pounds: also a British wild-flowers book was produced. A mint copy of this book is worth around £220. When the popularity of these was recognized, more titles produced. 'uniform in the series', but during World War II production was limited due to paper and labour shortages. Even so, by 1941 Warne had published the first six Observer's books. ~#~ THIS BOOK: Jacket has taken the wear protecting the book, no bumping, the book is in fine condition, no underling or tick marks. ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS? First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Postage stamps have only been in existence the past 150 years or so. The author, an architect by profession, describes their birth and traces their development throughout the world by relating them wherever possible to their artistic and social context. He explains how they are produced, examines the characteristics of different printers and designers, and gives advice on methods of collecting. An unusual feature is the geographicallly arranged gazetteer of countries, which will assist in identifying stamps, in locating obscure places of origin, and in tracing the consequences of political upheavals-from the nineteenth-century mergings of German and Italian States to the latest proclamations of independence in Africa. The book has a helpful glossary and three indexes. There are 17 plates in full colour and 502 black and white illustrations. Mr. New concerns himself much more with aesthetics than with technicalities, and after reading his book both the novice and the collector of long standing will truly appreciate the art of postage stamp design.
