Endelman, University of Michigan), Paul Lawrence Rose proposes also a new view of the history of modern antisemitism in general that challenges the distinction usually made between Christian antisemitism and secular "racial" antisemitism. According to his new interpretation, there is a continuous antisemitic mentality that is revealed in the deep "mythology" of the German tradition~the myths of the Wandering Jew, Moloch, and the "destruction of Judaism." Rose illustrates how Christian antisemitism was transmuted first into "enlightened" philosophical antisemitism, then into the atheistic social radicalism of the early nineteenth century, and thence into extreme racism. The prime method by which the Christian myths of Jew~hatred were secularized was the new myth of "Revolution." In original readings of a range of "revolutionary" German thinkers (including Kant, Herder, Hegel, Bauer, Marx, Hess, Frantz, and above all Richard Wagner), Rose shows how hatred changed its vocabulary and ideology: Jewish "stubbornness" no longer referred to the Jews' refusal to convert, but rather to their "egoistic" and "loveless" refusal to accept freedom by embracing the "life~force of history and progress." He analyzes the paradoxical tendency of many thinkers to be at once favorable and hostile to the Jews, and he proves how misleading it is to divide German thinkers into "pro~" and "anti~Jewish" compartments. This leads him to conclude that the history of Jewish Emancipation has been largely misconceived by Jewish and German historians alike. Rose lucidly explains what is specifically German about German antisemitism and argues that German thinkers of both left and right espoused a revolutionary desire to redeem the German people by the "destruction" of Judaism. Not goals but choice of harsh or gentle means~expulsion or assimilation~divided left from right. This was the revolutionary antisemitic mentality that led ultimately~although not inevitably ~ to the tragedies of the twentieth century. Disturbingly, the book reveals how it was that German concepts of "humanity," "freedom," and "reason" fostered the growth of an antisemitism in Germany that in other Western societies was inhibited by the liberal versions of those same ideas.
