This exhibition was at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York in February - March of 1974 and at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond April - June and at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in June - September. It is more than a nostalgic reminder of a grass roots tradition. It is a major showing of art objects whose high esthetic quality has often been overlooked, even by Americans themselves. The scope is enormous, ranging from the earliest days of our nation through its first hundred years. In those early days, we like to recall, tobacco represented the nation's first major crop as well as its first major industry, and this exhibition quite naturally includes the tobacconist's Indian together with scores of other folk art objects noteworthy for their vitality, their craftsmanship and their beauty. Organizing such a comprehensive collection was a major and challenging enterprise and involved lenders from both private and public collections. This exhibition of great folk art of the past offered an important opportunity to look forward with a fresh perspective --- to see American folk art in new ways, not solely as bits of history and colorful reminders of the past but as a legacy of art that enriches our lives and an inspiration toward continued creativity in our more complex age. Contents in Four Parts: Pictures Painted Drawn and Stitched, Sculpture in Wood Metal Stone and Bone, Decoration for Home and Highway, and Furnishings. Each part is prefaced with textual explanations. There is a nine page general Preface by Jean Lipman and an Introduction by Alice Winchester. An appendix with Biographicall Index of Artists, Author's Bookshelf and Acknowledgments. Large heavy book that may incur additional Priority Shipping charges to some locations.
