Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. 223 pages. hardcover. Cover illustration by Edmund Dulac. keywords: Children's Books Arabic Myth. FROM THE PUBLISHER - THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is the most celebrated collection of tales in all of literature. Though a distinguished feature of the tales is their highly erotic flavor, many have found their way into the list of indispensable classics, beloved by all ages. Two of the best known are 'Sindbad the Sailor' and 'Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp,' here included, together with 'The Story of the Three Calenders,' and 'The Sleeper Awakened.' Edmund Dulac is renowned for his imaginative, colorful illustrations of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, done originally in 1907. He masterfully captured the fantastic elements of the tales by using brilliantly colored characters against soft, impressionistic backgrounds and in other scenes, achieved a brooding and dark mysterious atmosphere. In all of his illustrations there is an otherworldliness. The events of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS are supposed to have taken place during the reign of the great Caliph, or ruler of the Faithful, Haroun al Raschid, who lived in Baghdad in 786-808 A.D. The tales are strung together by the story of the Sultan Schahriah, who married a new wife each evening and put her to the following morning. One clever bride, Scheherazade, began a story in the Sultan's hearing, an hour before daybreak. She stopped before she got to the most interesting part and promised to conclude the next day. The Sultan was so captivated by her story that he postponed her execution. This episode was repeated for 1001 nights, after which time the Sultan was convinced of Scheherazade's faithfulness and intelligence. The adventures of 'Sindbad the Sailor' were perhaps derived from Homer's ODYSSEY and ancient oriental legends. Sindbad tells of his seven great voyages in which he narrowly escapes with his life when he mistakes a whale for an island; travels to the treacherous Valley of Diamonds in the claws of a rokh, a huge bird; escapes from a sepulchre with vast riches; survives a shipwreck by living on coconuts that monkeys hurl at him, and finally buys his freedom from slavery with elephant tusks. The story of 'Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp' tells of a magic lamp and a magic ring which produce two monstrous genii, ready to grant any wishes for the owner. Aladdin gains possession of the magical objects and demands money, jewels, treasures, and a magnificent palace. These extravagances cause him many problems, but in this land of enchantment, cannot almost any obstacle be overcome? In 'The Story of the Three Calenders' the Khalifeh (King) of Baghdad disguises himself as a merchant. After persuading three calenders (wandering beggars) - actually kings who have lost their thrones - to tell their stories, surprising results occur. And in 'The Sleeper Awakened,' a merchant entertains a mysterious stranger one night, not Knowing it is the Khalifeh of Baghdad in disguise. He rewards the merchant for his generosity in a most unusual way, almost causing him to go mad. The tables are turned, however, when the merchant tricks the Khalifeh. This unusually beautiful book, a work of art in itself, has been designed as a companion to the RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, also illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Like that book, which was originally published by the distinguished British house of Hodder and Stoughton in a special deluxe edition in 1909, this volume is a faithfully rendered facsimile edition. inventory #7422.
