Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Reprint of the 1957 edition published by Viking Press. 2nd printing. Erstwhile remainder w/tiny red Random House stamp on text block bottom, o/w unmarked. Clean & tight copy, unread, in Near Fine condition. "With the publication of his first novel, LIE DOWN IN DARKNESS, William Styron was catapulted into the front ranks of postwar American writers, achieving immediate international recognition. 'Few recent writers have had the capacity to mingle beauty, wisdom and narrative art as he has done,' said the New York Herald Tribune Book Review. And the New York Times Book Review said it contained 'the most powerful passage of female interior monologue since Molly Bloom's soliloquy in Ulysses. [] In LIE DOWN IN DARKNESS, the South looms dark and ominous in the background--its biblical rhetoric, its conflicts between a tradition of religious fundamentalism and modern skepticism, racial conflicts and the industrialization of a rural society. But more than a novel about a special place and time, it is the story of a tormented family submerged in infidelity and driven by a vengeful love that is blocked, hurt and perverted; Peyton Loftis, whose tragic beauty sowed devotion and destruction wherever she went; her ineffectual father, Milton, whose infidelity has made his marriage no more than a stage drama; and Helen, his wife, who loves only what she can control--her crippled daughter Maudie, or the childish part of her husband. [] This extraordinarily powerful novel--long out of print in its hardcover edition--is the portrait of a family who, in the words of Sir Thomas Browne in his Urn Burial, 'all lie down in darkness.' And only one, Peyton, will have her 'light in ashes.'" [jacket copy] "A remarkable and fascinating novel--and one of the few completely human and mature novels published since the Second World War. A story that becomes completely absorbing and is treated with brilliance and boldness of insight, with great compassion, and with a sense of dreadful and tragic comedy, too. LIE DOWN IN DARNESS is practically perfect."--Saturday Review. Near Fine hardcover w/sharp corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in an intact & bright jacket.
