Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Book Club Edition. Rachel Fleming is called to the hospital to try to help Stephanie Clair, her old school friend, who is suffering from what seems to be a paralyzing emotional experience. The attending physician feels that the recent death of Stephanie's mother, the great ballerina Tatania Livanova, is not enough to account for the young woman's complete psychological withdrawal. Since Stephanie has no family, it appears as if only Rachel can help provide the hidden information that may, perhaps, save the girl's sanity. Rachel decides, finally, to visit Tatania Livanova's former lover, Fabian Seal, who now lives at Jessamy Court, the ballerina's Dorset villa. And Rachel decides to go, not as herself, a mere interloper, but pretending to be Stephanie. Though Fabian did not know the girl, presumably he would owe her courtesy and explanation for the strange events that led to her mother's death. Once at Jessamy Court, Rachel has trouble holding on to her own identity and maintains a cool head in the same house with the two strangely compelling men she finds there. More important, the Dorset atmosphere is filled with mysterious and ancient strains, with a witchcraft Rachel resists at first but which eventually terrifies- and almost overwhelms- her.
