Stanislaw Lem (1921 2006) was a Polish writer of science fiction and essays on various subjects, including philosophy, futurology, and literary criticism. Many of his science fiction stories are of satirical and humorous character. Lem's books have been translated into more than 50 languages and have sold more than 45 million copies. Lem is perhaps best known as the author of the 1961 novel Solaris. His science fiction works explore philosophical themes through speculations on technology, the nature of intelligence, the impossibility of communication with and understanding of alien intelligence, despair about human limitations, and humanity's place in the universe. One of Lem's major recurring themes was the impossibility of communication between profoundly alien beings, which may have no common ground with human intelligence, and humans. "Return from the Stars" tackles such matters and the evolution of machine intelligence, alien contact, biological solutions to reduce or eliminate war and violence, and the psychology of alienation. Classic Lem. First Avon Bard Edition (1982), so stated. First Printing indicated by acomplete numerical sequence.

Translated by Barbara Marszal & Frank Simpson:- Synopsis: Beyond future shock. Space wasn't half so scary, half so strange, or even half so alien, as what Hal Bregg returned to. He had been away from Planet Earth for ten years space-time. But that was 127 years back home and a lot of things had changed. Sex. Money. Transit. Violence. There's no more violence. Everyone gets it 'betrizated' out of them in childhood. And that's just the beginning. Naturally, Hal refuses to be acclimated by the 'Adapt' people. He prefers to figure it out all by himself, be a stranger in a strange land, draw his own conclusions. And he does.:- Review(s): "In the unlikely event that a science-fiction writer is deemed worthy of a Nobel Prize in the near future, the most likely candidate would be a Pole named Stanislaw Lem" states The New York Times. And Fantasy & Science Fiction writes, "One of the world's finest writers. Lem has accomplished the difficult illusion of showing us a future world which may be distasteful to us, but which may be seen as quite legitimate and even desirable by its own people, and by us, if we were to change certain ways of seeing and understanding:- (original cost $2.95).
