Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. [xiv], 336. 16pp. illustrations. Original publisher's brown cloth lettered gilt on spine. White and orange illustrated dust jacket lettered black and orange on spine and upper cover. Publisher's file copy with the stamp of the Weidenfeld Library on front free endpaper and label on spine. Typed signed letter from V. G. Kiernan to The Manager, Messrs Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 91 Clapham High St., London SW4 7TA loosely inserted addressed from 'Woodcroft', Lauder Rd., Stow, Galashiels TD1 2QW dated 21 Nov.'87 and consisting of about 130 words in which Kiernan enquires about this book which had been out of print for a good many years. At the time it had just been reprinted in America and he wants to arrange a new edition in the UK. He assumes Weidenfeld & Nicolson will not be interested and suggests going to another publisher if they have no objections. A sheet of ruled notepaper loosely inserted with the title of the book and the numbers sold and printed written in biro followed by the words 'Rights reverted'. The book was subsequently published by the Cresset Library in 1988. A survey that is a history of complacency, bigotry, misunderstanding and infrequent enlightenment by the Marxist historian V. G. Kiernan (1913-2009). Crossing out at foot of letter. Very good. 0297177613.
