Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [From the library of Benjamin B. King.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Large tears to jacket. Pages unmarked. Related ephemera taped to rear end page. "Benjamin B. King was an intelligence officer for the British Royal Air Force during World War II. After World War 2 broke out in Europe in September 1939, he joined the British Royal Air Force as a 'penguin' who could not fly because of eyesight problems. He was assigned to Coastal Command at the airbase in Wick in the very north of Scotland, which provided defense for Britain in the North Sea, engaging the Germany Navy and Air Force. After his stint at Wick, Ben was transferred to the vital but vulnerable British base at Gibraltar off the coast of Spain, where the British monitored German and Italian military operations in the Western Mediterranean. While in Gibraltar, one of his tasks was to listen to Luftwaffe radio communications and track the movement of German and Italian airplanes. After Gibraltar, Ben was called back to Britain and assigned to the secret British code-breaking operations at Bletchley Park in England, which played a critical role in the Allies' war effort by monitoring and decoding German military communications and ultimately breaking the German Enigma code." - Obit.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition.Philby. Previous owners name and date written neatly to inside cover. Foxing to edge. Wear and tear to D/J. Introduction by John Le Carre. The true story of Kim Philby is so fantastic that a spy-noevlist would scarcely dare to invent it. A Soviet agent from his early twenties, his penetration of the British secret service was so effective that in 1944 he became the director of its conter-Soviet department - a feat of duplicity unequalled in the annals of espionage. He then became the link-man between the British service and the American Central Intellegence Agency, from which position he was able to betray every important secret of Western intelligence. This book tells for the first time in detail how Philby penetrated the British secret service and rose to be its favourite son; of the operations he betrayed and the agents he sent to their deaths; how his cover was broken when he had to protect Donald Maclean - whose atomic espionage is here exposed for the first time in detail - and the amazing sequel in which Philby was secretly 'tried', cleared, and re-employed by the secret service. Not until 1961, ten years after the vital evidence came into their hands, did the men at the head of the secret world finally acknowledge the bitter facts of Philby's treachery. Illustrated. 296 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby ORB, OL ODN (1 January 1912 ? 11 May 1988) was a British intelligence officer and a double agent for the Soviet Union. In 1963 he was revealed to be a member of the Cambridge Five, a spy ring which had divulged British secrets to the Soviets during World War II and in the early stages of the Cold War. Of the five, Philby is believed to have been most successful in providing secret information to the Soviets. Ref XXX 4.
