Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Storey, David. Saville. First reprint. London: Jonathan Cape, 1976. Hardback, VG, in clipped dustjacket with minr shelfwear to edges and spine. Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong and tight. Top edge of text block stained green, slightly faded. Jacket painting by Tom Adams. 506pp., contents clean and bright. David Malcolm Storey (13 July 1933 27 March 2017) was an English playwright, screenwriter, award-winning novelist and a professional rugby league player. He won the Booker Prize in 1976 for this novel, Saville. The novel centres on Colin, a young boy growing up in the Yorkshire mining village of Saxton during the Second World War and the postwar years. Tom Adams (March 29, 1926 December 9, 2019) was a US-born Anglo-Scots illustrator and painter. Long active in a variety of visual formats, he is known for his work in book cover art, portrait painting, poster, advertising and album art. He is most widely known for his book cover art for the paperback editions of Agatha Christie. Adams is renowned for his unique exploration of a form that was vital for much of twentieth-century art: the collage. Even Adams's covers that seem like still lifes are, in actuality, juxtapositions of elements and objects that normally are not in such proximity. It is this uncanny proximity despite (or, rather, precisely because of) the near photo-realistic accuracy that creates the unsettling effect. . Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Uncorrected proof copy. Wrappers. Backstrip slightly faded, and very slightly nicked at foot. Winner of the 1976 Booker Prize. "It stands a little aside from the fiction I have been working on for almost 15 years now," Storey told John Higgins of The Times in a pre-publication interview. "After the success of Radcliffe [1963] I had saved enough money to start work on the Great Novel I had wanted to write since I was 21. I set to it in 1962 and by 1967 it was evident it was going to come out at over 3,000,000 words, a huge turgid thing. Quite clearly it had to be chopped up and partially restructured. Basically, there are four books there: one has been cut out from the Great Novel and issued separately . . .".

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a beautifully preserved copy of the novel that won the 1976 Booker Prize. The sage green cloth-bound boards are unmarked and there are no scratches, dents or bumps. The gilt title lettering on the spine is bright as new. The text block is square, with no sign of a lean on the spine, which is remarkable in a book of this size and thickness: over 500 pages. The green stain on the top edge of the text block (which nicely complements the boards) remains strong and the fore and bottom edges are spotless. Internally, the pages are bright and clean with no signs of earlier ownership other than notes relating to a previous resale price, written in pencil on the front paste down. The colours of the wraparound artwork on the dust jacket (a painting by Tom Adams) is unfaded and the evocative scenes from urban industrial and country life retain their power. There is a very small closed tear at the top edge of the rear panel and short graze at the top of the fold where the spine meets the back panel. The original publisher's price (£4.50) is still in place. See five photos of this book and do please ask for more if any additional views would be helpful.
