"These diaries of Sir Edward Dunlop are of great human and historical importance. They are concerned with an aspect of the War in the East, a sort of war within the externally more dramatic and momentous war of which the world knows far too little and of which those who were most intimately and authoritatively concerned have not yet adequately rendered account. This war within a War was that which the hundreds of thousands of European, American and Australian prisoners of war and internees of the Japanese army, had to fight not only for physical survival buffer sanity of mind and wholeness of spirit." Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Reprint. More than 40 years ago Sir Edward Dunlop, then a Lieutenant-Colonel, began these diaries at the start of his imprisonment by the Japanese in Java and on the Burma-Thailand railway. His meticulous observations of prison camp life were concealed all through the war, and by the time peace came in 1945, he carried with him a unique record of the lives of prisoners-of-war. As a commanding officer and a surgeon, "Weary" became a hero and a legend to thousands of Australian and Allied prisoners, whose lives were saved with meagre medical supplies and the instruments the medical officers carried on their backs through Java and the Thai jungles. Sir Edward describes how the camps were organized, he records deaths, cholera epidemics, operations, and torture, his own - rare - despair, the movement of prisoners up and down the line, and his constant struggle to protect the sick from being drafted into Japanese work parties. This 1986 reprint is sold in FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. There is a neat signature of ownership on the FEP.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in great condition. Pages in great condition. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> My years between the ages of seven and twelve that I spent on my father's farm, Summerlea, about the Sheepwash Creek at Stewarton, coincided with the momentous events of World War I. Scores of sturdy, heroic men, including four Dunlops, donned the ANZAC garb to seek high adventure or death. It was a bitter frustration to my burning ardour that my participation was largely limited to The Young Gardeners' League, for my heart yearned for the high romantic ground of adventure in strange lands, and the challenge of death. Later, I was to reflect upon the advice of a Spanish proverb: 'Never wish for anything too much. It might come true.' I served enthusiastically in cadets and Citizen Forces with yearly camps and some training in the Lee-Enfield mark 3 rifle, and Lewis gun. After qualifying as a doctor in 1934, I speedily obtained a commission as Captain RAAMC attached to the Coburg-Brunswick Battalion whose annual camps were at Numurkah. This rank I took to England in 1938 during further post-graduate train.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Printing. xxiii, 401pp, index, glossary, appendices, bw ills, maps. Or red cloth in jacket. Light edge wear to jacket, slight fading to spine. SIGNED and inscribed to a Chevalier of the Knights of St John, to which organisation Weary also belonged, by Weary Dunlop on half-title (With every good wish Weary EE Dunlop 19 July 1988). Weary Dunlop is one of, if not the, most revered and respected Australian war heroes. He suffered years of mistreatment at the hands of the Japanese as a POW on the notorious Burma-Thailand Railway but helped many hundreds to survive the brutal treatment of the Japanese. He was much beloved by British and US soldiers in captivity as well as his Australian compatriots. A truly great man who here presents his diaries of those terrible years. He will be greatly missed.
